Well, it was about a year ago that I was involved in a car accident. Over the St-Jean Baptiste weekend, i was in a hit-and-run with a drunk driver. My car was totalled, and he was arrested in a town 20 minutes away (he had 2 flat tires and smoke coming out of his engine, so I was told, and had to drive down a major highway to get to where he was stopped. But at least he WAS stopped.) I was very lucky to get out of it unhurt. When the police drove me home, I thought my mom was going to hug me to death!

And the year before that at about the same time, our old car (the one that was "killed") suffered a mechanical break that could have been very dangerous for me if it had happened just a few minutes before while I was on the highway. The clutch cable broke halfway while I was driving home (I felt the clutch pedal give), and gave up completely just before I was going to pull into the driveway!!
I swear that car was trying to tell me something!!

It's sad to think that little car is now probably in a million pieces... I learned to drive on that car... it was like "family" to me... And I was behind the wheel both times when it ran into major trouble.
Maybe I'm cursed?

I wouldn't say that you are cursed - you are blessed! You could have been killed by the drunk driver but you weren't and you could have stopped suddenly on the highway and be hit by another car and killed when the clutch gave out - but instead it gave out just before you pulled into the driveway.

I think you have someone watching out for you

I would be counting my blessings

Puerto Rico... land of rice and beans.
What's the St-Jean Baptiste weekend? (I just recognize that its the French name of St. John the Baptist, but not weekend).

Anyway, think about this: The little car could have had another fit this year!!!

Its a real pity, though... sounds a nice little car... if it still existed I would have asked you to sell it to me.

I must admit, I'm not very good with Canadian/Quebec history, but the "fete de la St-Jean" (as we refer to it here) is a celebration unique to Quebec. It has something to do with the war of 1812, and became a national holiday in '76. It's celebrated on the 24th of June.

And I don't know that the car would have still been "alive" now. It was 11 years old when it was hit, and really starting to show signs of getting old. But it was a very reliable, solid little car ('92 Nissan Sentra Classic). Both my brother and I learned to drive on it, and we were thinking it was time to start looking for a new car anyway. The hit-and-run just jump started things. Even when it got hit, it held up well. The hood was what was hit, and it folded like a sheet of paper, but the engine was still running, and the radio was still on. I managed to drive the car out of the intersection and onto the side of the road, got out, and remember being quite irritated to see the coolant leaking out (I had just topped it up before leaving work!!) And thank goodness there were witnesses that stayed to lend a hand 'cause I was too shocked to be much use with the police report.

Here's what the car looked like when it was intact (not our car, a picture I found on the internet, but ours looked the same)

this is what I saw from inside

and what it looked like from outside
(would you believe the front bumper was filled with STYROFOAM?!?
