Start teflon coating your house now! LOL

No, seriously, congratulations on your new little(?) girl! She is adorable and looks like there is some great dane in her! Puppies grow up so fast - my Sam and Spike were about 11 pounds in January and are now close to 60 pounds.

You will want to read about crate training, puppy socialization and housebreaking ASAP.

Puppies just don't have full bladder control until they are around 6 months old, and while you can teach them to give you signals when they have to go, they have to go out frequently. One of the links that I found said to take the puppy out after 1) eating, 2) playing, 3) waking up. That about puts puppy outside all day long! LOL

Crate training sounds cruel to some people, but it really helps them to develop bladder control, and frankly gives you a break when they need a time out and when they are over rambunctious.

Bitter Apple is a necessary tool in my house. The first time you see puppy chewing on something inappropriately, spray the thing they are chewing with the bitter apple (make sure they see you do it), then spray a tiny bit in their mouths. They will hate it, but everytime they see the bottle after that and see you apply it, they get away fast.

Lots of chew toys are necessary. You have to constantly redirect them to their toys or they will chew the house. It can get frustrating, but eventually they get it.

Socializing puppy is key, particularly if she gets big. They need lots of experiences to make them good dog citizens - meeting people of all ages and other dogs, car rides, stores, etc.

Here's a link to another forum that addresses dogs and puppies. Lots of great stickies and links to good information!

Thanks Momofmany , you give me great help there
I was thinking about Crate training her , but don't have the money now to buy a Crate . I also will check out this link you have posted for me . Thanks again for the great help

huggles I will not get any more animals , no matter how cute they are . I have seen plenty of cute cats/kitten while I was there , but knowing I have to much as it is I will stay strong . I just wanted a female dog and knew I can handle one more dog if it is a female .

Lady is adorable, Hedi - congratulations on the new addition to the family. With those paws, she's really going grow quite a bit more.

I cant any more , really my house is full . I did not even wanted PD Girl , but after my husband got her and he has fallen in love with her and knowing our shelter is full to the max we kept her . The 2 Oriental were my last cats I wanted .

When I went to get Lady I made a mistake and look who was there and not there any more .
Sadly they pts a black mom cat and her kittens and a mom dog with her pups
That almost broke my heart seeing that . I am sure it will be hard at times for me there to help at the shelter .

Thank you guys for all the compliments on Lady

Jcat , yes I think she will get big . They said she is only 2-3 month old , so you know she will grow a lot more
She has a great dane in her . One woman said that she thinks that Lady is pure bred great dane , she has 3 great dane's at her house . So I really don't know what she really is , but will ask the vet on wednesday when I go to see if he/she may know .

It's hard to tell just from the pictures whether she's purebred, but her ears and snout look right, plus her coloring. I always called that "gray brindle" (grau-geströmt), but apparently the correct expression is "merle". I'll have to scan a picture of Rudy, my sister's late Dane. He was merle, and roughly the size of a Shetland pony. He was a funny dog. He was about four when she got him from the SPCA, and I was afraid he wouldn't let me in because I visited only once a year, so I used to have my pockets full of dog biscuits for him, and would pick up one of the cats when he saw me the first time during any visit. He let me in alright, but wouldn't let me leave - he would grab my clothing and pull me away from the door when I wanted to go! More dog biscuits, please!

OMG
, I can see myself beeing very scared with a size dog like that
. To tell you the truth , I am scared of big dogs
really
. I am sure glad you pick up a lot of treats to escape

A friend of mine had two great dane dogs and so know a little about them . They are also called the gentle giant dog , but I guess it all come down to how you race a dog . I think blue merle is the colour what the lady said my dog is .

Thank you Sam

I have to say "Lady" sure keeps me busy all day long to get her house broken
. But she is getting much better , I always praise her when she did her busyness outside and then Lady is very happy that she made me happy
. Lady is a very happy girl any way and turns out she is sweet too . Today it was the first time she licked my feet
, I love that . I got her some vitamine since I think she is a little under nurished , it is for puppy's and small dogs and think will help her to grow better . For sure I will talk to the vet next week about that . Lady and her sister were in a cat cage till last week at the shelter and you can see on her foot where she was laying and hurt laying all the time . She was one week outdoors in a bigger run with other puppy's together and sure enough she has 2 bites what I think come from the yellow flie
. One yellow flie did bite me while I showed my husband the dogs and have seen a couple off them darn flies out there . I really feel for those dogs , the poor baby's
I also got her some more toys today to keep her teeth busy
Today "Toby" and "Lady" have played together for the first time and was really cute to watch
.My friend Iris said she has some medical shampoo left from the vet and will bring it by on Sunday . I did give her a little bath with Dawn liquit soap (blue) , but her smell did not much improove . So I can't wait till I can give her a real good bath , so she starts to smell better
So everything is looking great so far

Lady is beautiful! She looks like she's gonna be big. She kind of looks like a
Catahoula Cur to me. Some of them have the same coloring. She is gonna be spoiled I know, what a lucky girl!

Do you or any one in here know ?

I did give her a bath , boy was she smelly
and after her I also bathed Toby
Now both dogs smell good and my back is about to kill me LOL

Hedi, you should start training Lady now to climb into the bathtub/shower. Encourage her to jump in, and give her a treat and praise when she does, because it won't be long before you won't be able to lift her. The same goes for jumping into the car. We had a German Shepherd/St. Bernard mix when we first married, and that dog was 3 or 4 inches taller than me (he used to put his paws on my shoulders to give me a "kiss") and 30 lbs. heavier. My family is crazy about big dogs, and while they're imposing, they don't seem to be "fear-biters" like many small dogs. Unfortunately, they don't live as long as little dogs, and can have hip dysplasia (HD).

That is a great idea Jcat with the bathtub and the car
I sure will try that .Yea hip dysplasia is common in big dogs , sadly
. That was one of the reason why Mike did not wanted the brown dog , it look like she had some problem with the hip . But then on the other hand they both need to fatten up some . I don't think they were well cared for befor the animal control picked them up
. That is also why I got the vitamine for her and my friend brought brewers yeast today for her too
I guess I find more out when I go with "Lady" to the vet on wednesday and see what they have to say how my Lady is doing .

I guess she is getting confi now at my home . We went to eat dinner this evening and when we come back , she clean out the shoe rack and I had like 4 pairs of shoes to pick up
I can see already going through the list every night what to put up and take away so she don't chew it

At least I don't have to carry her outside any more to pee
In the first two days I had to do that . She sad down and placed the front legs in front of her try to stop me to get her outside
It was to funny . Now I open the door and Lady is standing right there to go outside . I also think Toby is a great help , Lady see him go and then she wants to go too . It also looks like Toby really enjoy her in the house , now he is not lonely any more when I am gone
