Well they are cats, just bigger and wilder.

Who do you think would win between a lion or a tiger in a fight and why?

Which cat do you like better?

I like lions better, but a big siberian tiger might be a big match for a lion. A bet any big male lions can beat any other sub-species of tiger.

The lion, always.

Fighting Style and physiology. Lions have manes, tigers do not. The mane takes the brunt of the force, while the lion is able to directly access the shoulders and chest, and neck of the tiger.

Only in instances of severe size difference will the tiger prevail.

I hope that this curiosity is merely scholastic.

That is what I was thinking too. I've heard though that Siberians can get really thick mane-like furs on their neck. Of course the lion also has more than one way to kill.

W/ the best cats
I am not an animal expert but I like tigers over lions.

Tigers are loners, powerful and smart hunters who don't rely on the females of a pride to hunt for food. AND to me tigers are much cuter!

There's actually a series on the discovery channel called Animal Faceoff and the first episode dealt w/ this exact scenario. The show is actually pretty interesting as it uses animatronics to replicate the two "contestants" and then builds a computer scenario for the face-off. In the lion/tiger face off the lion wins.

Here's the link to the website.

Thick in relation to other tigers, but nothing to compare to a lion.

I saw the episode, the lion won. I though the Tiger would because of its size, but they argued that the Lion would win.

What species tiger did they base their finds on?
If based purely on the Bengal,Sumatra, or Indochinese yes, I can see where the lion would have the advantage.
If they based on the Siberian, however, I can see no way that a lion would come out on top.

Lions are my favorite animal so I'm definitely going to say they would win. I have no scientific basis for this whatsoever, I just think they are the best!

I don't think any of us are surprised by that, Amber!

Personally, I like tigers, too. Would rather not see either of them fight, though...call me an animal pacifist!

Guys I have been to many forums about this topic. I have talked with scientists( John Seidensticker, Mel Sunquist & Fiona Sunquist, Doc Antle, Craig Packer, Peter Jackson) they all are pretty much on agreement the it depends on the individual animal. However must of these guys say the larger Tiger will overpower the Lion. I have read books from Alex Kerr, Roman Proske, Mabel Starks, Bert Nelson all famous trainers they all say the Tiger would usually win in a fight with the Lion.

Personally don't see how a Lion can beat the Bengal Tigers of Nepal. Don't see how they can beat the big Muncharian Amur Tigers.
