Hello. My little kitten's name is Lipeh (pronounced leepay). She's the cutest little thing and actually let me sleep through the night last night! Yay! I played classical music and played with her for hours before bed and it worked! Anyway, I was given some catnip samples when I bought her scratching post and I was wondering if this is safe for kittens (she's 9 weeks)? She had a little, went a bit mad, then seemed to be breathing really heavily and shaking a bit, so I took off the rest, but just wondering if this normal. Hope to meet you all in coming months. I love my kitty...

Welcome to TCS.

Catnip is not harmful to young kittens, although kittens younger than about 4 months aren't usually affected by catnip, so the reaction you saw may have been coincidental. Perhaps try a little again with Lipeh and see what her reaction is.

My Pookie is about 10 months old and still unaffected by catnip. Frodo (1) and Moth (almost 10), however, are addicts. It's not harmful, just no biggie to kittens.
