Hi,

I was wondering if this price sounds right. Before going out to a Chicago suburb area shelter, I want to make sure that there arenâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t any expenses that come up as being unexpected.

Adoption 2 kittens $252 ($126 ea.) includes spay/neuter, rabies, distemper combo, leukemia test, fecal exam, worming, avid microchip, and capstar.

Food (wet and dry), litter boxes (2 or 3) cat litter, food and water bowls (2 of each ceramic), flea collars, toys, scratch post, cat house for climbing, treats $150-$250.

That ends up being $500. I was wondering if $500 sounds about right or is it too low.

Thanks,

Jason

We got our cats for $85 each, no chip, but the shelter sets their s up with all of that and a chip fo $95 .. but that of course is gonna be different all around. I also don't like flea collars, personally. I think frontline plus would be ideal, but more often than not an indoor only cat will not have fleas. I got my climbing/scratching post at walmart for not that expensive, and remember not to get too many treats, because they shouldn't have a lot of their diet be treats, aand with only 2 kittens they could go stale and that's not good eatin.

That's about right - But NO FLEA COLLARS PLEASE - Especially Hartz. They can do more harm than good.

If you are looking for flea treatment please get it through your vet.

Otherwise can't wait to see pics !!!!

Turtlecat & Hell603,

Thanks for the info. I have never adopted cats or any animal before so I wasn't sure if $126 a kitten sounded high or not. I haven't done anything yet to cat proof my condo, so I am hoping that I can choose the kittens on Sunday and pick them up the following Saturday.I will make sure to post picks when I get the cats. Maybe I can take some Sunday.

Thanks,

Jason

You will want to bring the kittens to your vet for a health check after you get them home. As much as shelters try to screen out diseases, they are overcrowded and not an ideal environment for keeping kittens healthy. And many kittens are treated for parasites at the shelter, but still need longer term care once they are home. Make sure you factor in that cost!

Well for everything your getting I guess it sounds good. At our shelter the kitten are $70 for 1 or $110 for 2, they are not microchipped, or spayed or neutered. They tested for FIV & Feline Lukemia & up to date on shots. We don't believe in spaying or neutering until 6 months of age, but that's another discussion for another time. That said I had my boy's neutered for somewhere aroud $100 each. To spay a female is more expensive.

And btw....$126 per kitten is very reasonable. It most likely costs the shelter more than that to provide all the services they did for the kittens. Ours charge $80, and lose money on each adoption.

I'd also say that's a reasonable price. But to echo everyone else: NO FLEA COLLAR! Old school and dangerous.

Our shelter is about 75 per cat and that includes a free checkup at the vet, but no microchipping or tests, just vaccination and spay/neuter.

Congrats and good luck!

P.S. Glad you've already decided to go with a pair of pussy cats instead of just one! So much better for you AND them!

My two boys cost $30.00 a piece, but the shelter thought they were too young to be neutered, tested for FIV/Feline Luekemia, etd. So I had all that done at my vet which when you added up all fees cost more than $126. So if that's how much it costs, then you are getting a good deal.

Litterboxes, water and food bowls don't have to be very expensive... toys for the most part are cheap though they normally have to be replaced frequently, scratching posts can be expensive... OR, you can just get a two by 4 that's tall enough and wrap it with sissal rope from home depot for $10.00. The cat houses can get REALLY expensive. So, if you already have one picked out that's in this price range then I would agree with these expenses.

The best way to estimate expenses might be to just go out on PetSmart or Petco's website... add what you want to buy to cart then view your cart and see what the total damage is. That takes the guess work right out of it!

Enjoy your new babies!!! They are so much fun!

I don't know much about prices for kitties in the US, but I just wanted to add a piece of advice from experience. If possible ask them if you can hold off on the microchip for the time being. My babies were "chipped" the day we got them and I am so sorry that it happened that way.

Our kitties were very traumatised by that experience, my Dexter-boy ended up being a claustrophobic cat. He would stay indoors as long as the cat flap was open, a window or the sliding door. As soon as these were closed he would have a panic attack. My baby girl is a very serious cat and I think this would have been very different if it wasn't for the chipping. Our newest baby will be chipped when he is neutered and up until then will wear a collar and photos of him will be on our complex pet list.

DO NOT EVER USE FLEA COLLARS ON CATS

Do not use any flea control product that contains Pyrethrins on cats.

Use Frontline Plus or Advantage (from a veterinarian). The stuff sold in the stores is much less effective, (basically lower concentration).
