How do you teach kittens not to jump in your lap, while you are eating?

I adopted two kittens two days ago, ( I have a couple more questions in the behavior forum...) Unless they are napping, any time we sit down they practically run to get in our laps, and nuzzle our faces....Which we love....but, not so much while we are trying to have a meal. I don't want to discourage them from sitting in our laps entirely, (as a result of just trying to keep them down while we are eating..) and, I really don't like the idea of 'bannishing' them to a different room while we sit down to eat. Any suggestions??

If you have a emty container (like chips) and place something in what can make noice and shake it when one or both try to jump up will help them to stay down .After some time they will learn not to jump up while you eat .

our oldest cat used to do that all the time when he was a kitten - he would even jump up on the table.
We used to just put him on the floor each time he did it - if he did it too many times and we were getting frustrated then he would be put in the bathroom for 5 minutes... he learnt and now he doesnt do it AT ALL... but he loves being on the lap at other times...

now Cedar is a different story - as he is still a kitten he does it all the time still but we are using the same tactics and there certainly is improvement. It takes some time and patience but it will work

Thanks so much!! It is pretty frusterating to keep picking them up, and putting them on the floor, but I am going to try the chip bag, and/or putting them in the bathroom for 5 minutes. It's good to know it's something that they will grow out of too!! Thanks again!

your welcome and good luck - you just need patience. I know its frustrating at times but it will be worth it in the long run.

Make sure you put him in the bathroom and not the bedroom - you want him to think that this is a bad thing and bedrooms are often to comfy for them

My vet calls it the 'sin bin room' - we use this for a number of things if the cats are misbehaving and nothing else is working - it really does work like a gem over time

You can also blow one puff of air gently in their face when they jump up, and tell them NO- using a soda can with a few coins in it will also startle them out of the behavior. Or pile up some loose catnip and let them entertain themselves while you eat.
