I went home at lunch time and picked Dori up to cuddle. I noticed one eye she was squinting closed. There were tears coming out of it and a small amount of yellow stuff in the corner, there was yellow stuff in the corner of the other but no tears. I called the vet right away and told her about it and while I was on the phone I remember that I gave her loose catnip for the first time last night. She rolled all in it and during the night she tore the bag open and had the stuff all over her. They told me it very well could me a reaction to the catnip. She suggested I watch her for a day or so and if it gets worse or doesn't clear up to make an appointment. I asked her if it would be causing Dori any pain and she said she didn't think so. Does any one have any idea if this really could be from the catnip? With the yellow stuff I feared infection. Should I clean her eyes out? If so what should I use? I don't want her eyes to hurt her

I believe the pet stores sell an eyewash solution. But you can also use saline eyewash.

I have always used the artificial tears (saline solution) to flush their eyes out. If the membranes are puffy and/or red or you see a scratch on her eye you should get her into the vet ASAP.

Gee, I'm with you - as a retired rn, yellow to me means pus and infection. Is this a thickish yellow discharge?

I wonder if a stem from the catnip (most catnip, not all, comes with bits of stems, unless you buy stalkless or fine grind and it says no stems included). I think Spotz had a great suggestion, I am pretty sure both petco and petsmart carry eye rinse solutions, that would allow you to gently rinse around the eye and if she'll let, over the eye. However...if by any chance you feel there is something currently "in" the eye, it's best to have your vet do an exam as well as the actual flush.

Just my opinion,

The strangest thing.... I was worried sick about her, even called the vet on my way home to make a tentative appt for tomorrow and when I got home her eyes were perfectly clear. The yellow stuff was even gone.... I wonder if she could have gotten into something while I was at work, all though the place is pretty kitty proof. I am very careful not to leave anything dangerous to her out and she cant get in the cabinets with the cleaners.... I am very relieved that she turned out to be ok, but am still going to keep an eye on her.... maybe she just rubbed her eyes and the yellow stuff came out. It actually looked like the sleep we get in our eyes. But she has never had that before, her eyes are always very clear and clean, and it was just tearing up like she was crying.

Sometimes I think it is a huge plot to be sure we are catering to their every whim, and thinking of them every moment we are away...know what I mean?

Glad things look to be fine

Yeah, we call it "Gimpy Eye Syndrome" around here. That's why I wait a day or so after I treat with the Rx stuff I've got on hand to see if it's getting better or not.

sorry, in a silly mood here,
I was agreeing to you, who were agreeing to me, I couldn't say much more without repeating my original statment, which would then most likely be agreed with again...and then I'd agree again...and you....and shortly we'd be agreeing with each other too much and forgetting that there was more than agreeing to be doing.

Silly enough for you?
