NYC The Town so Nice, They Named it Twice!
I'm a writer and I love, no adore words and word origins...give me my NY Times Crossword and I'm happy as a clam (who decided clams were happy anyway?) I have my own set of words though that set my teeth, and nerves on edge and blood pressure thru the roof. I also have a list of words that make me smile and make me as contented as Elsie the cow (did anyone ever ask Elsie if she was content?) What's on your two lists?
Partial list..no particular order, curse words ommitted:

Hated Words

Veggie...they are vegetables damnit!
Awesome..not so bad now, but in the 1980s, I wanted to throw up every time I heard it!
Panties....uggggghhh...it's underwear to me..the P word sounds too prissy.
Groovy I lived it in the 60s and 70s don't need to relive it thank you!
Neat (see groovy)
Bootie As in shake it...I shake with my hand...I prefer bum.
Invalid As in a person who has a disability, not used as much anymore, but can still be
seen on private ambulances..as in Invalid Coach...disgusting..no one is invalid.

Loved Words

Serene First word in one of my favorite old old old novels..a prize for anyone who can
guess. Just say the word like a mantra, and you will feel that way.

Beethoven Okay not a word, but for a dead guy he has given me so much, my hero.

Almanac Just love the sound as it rolls off the tongue..and their fun to read.

Encyclopedia (see almanac)

Puppy Makes you smile, everytime.

Saturn Not sure why, just sounds nice, and I love to doodle Saturn...past life?

Marigold Sounds sunny

Sonata/Symphony I guess it's just the musical connotation

Constantinople Another good tongue roller.

Okay enough for now........

Giovanni - a name, but I love how it sounds.. and if it wasn't corny (and if I was italian) I'd name my son it.

Gucci - I know its a famous designer, but when I was a child I always called people and pets "Gucci" or rather - goochie.. I just love how it sounds.

Adagio - what it means and how it sounds.. and the song by Lara Fabian
mmm

Then there are some I just can't explain why I love them:

Whisper
Warmth/Warm
Flavour
Sigh

Because they draw an image from your mind so easily:
Seeps
Gush
Gasps

all I can think for now
Great post! I can't think of any bad ones. The only things that usually drive me nuts are abbreviated words like "bout, y'all, cuz, kay, doin" etc

I think the word I hate the most is illegitimate. When I hear someone describe a chile as illegitimate it makes me see red!

Others are more like prases... like 24/7 , or (place word here)101.

Words I like:

Cat and kitten..of course

My pet peeves are euphemisms. I don't know why people can't just say something the way it is. I'm not advocating being rude or insensitive, but really. . .

Collateral damage (This one is my all time "favorite") It's dead civilians killed in war.
The myriad of words that we have come up with for Dead or dying. I understand that people are trying to be delicate, but my problem is, when I say someone died, people look at me funny because I didn't say they passed on, went away, went with God. . .

For menstuation My monthly friend, Aunt Flow, my time of the month. . .

Words I love:

Shakespeare
Calm, balmy, breeze, love, hug, (probably because of what they represent)

I'm sure there are a ton more, but I can't think of them right now...

Love:

Ethereal, gossamer, radiant, tranquil, shimmer, sordid, balmy, chrysanthemum, daffodil, lurid, celestial, arpeggio, pianissimo, trepidation...I could go on and on!

Hate:

Nucular. It's freakin' NU-CLEAR!! How hard can it be, Mr. President?? NUUUUUCLEEEEEAAAAAR! I just want to punch the T.V. when someone says "nucular" and it's usually the president who's saying it! GRR!!

"Prolly". This one bugs the heck out of me. When I was still teaching I got kids who actually wrote this in their homework and on tests and such. How dang hard is it to write "probably"??

Fetus. Don't know why. Just sounds blech.

C*nt. This word is just the most foul, vile word to my ears.

"aks" instead of "ask". Again, is it really so hard to say, "ask"? I mean, you REALLY have to say "aks" on purpose, because I can't imagine a single person in this country really doesn't know that the word is really "ask." So to me it just says, "I want to fit in with all those other people that say 'aks'." And saying something just to fit in is a crock of cr@p. Be an individual and don't mispronounce things just because others do.

"Sa-WEET" or variants thereof. I don't know why but they drive me nuts.

Da bomb. Bombs are a bad thing, no matter if you put "da" in front of it or not.

Ah-ight? instead of Alright. Just sounds lazy and another one of those "let's say this to fit in" things. Especially when you put it after every dang thing you say.

You know what I'm sayin'? Same as above. Saying it once is enough. Saying it after every sentence...ARG!!! Yes! I know what you're saying! You don't have to ask after each sentence!

My teeth grind when I hear "irregardless".

Love sphygmomanometer! Just such a great word for the little cuff they put on your arm to check your blood pressure! (I know, I'm kinky!)

Have to agree with Serene - lovely word.

Hate cuss words - there are much better ways to communicate and create win-win situations, although when by oneself and stubs one's toe, the f word seems to make one feel better! LOL

I cringe when I hear any of the four letter words, or 24/7 (I think that is my pet hate), I dislike hearing someone being called a b.tch, c.w etc.
I love these words (and many more) but the ones that come to mind right now are:

mediterranean
starlight
Italian
peace
stream
Shakespeare
Amazon
moonshine
sparkle

Ok so I am a romantic and then I like the words, Buttons, Felix, Tara and Pebbles.

You have to realize that not all mispronunciations are to be "cool" a lot of people have speech problems and have a hard time handling the words that come out of their mouth. "Aks" is one of the very common ones.

I myself have a speech impairment and I say sooo many things wrongly when I'm speaking quickly or I'm nervous and tons of people think I do it as "slang" when really it isn't that.

You covered a lot of the words I despise, but anything that berates women and ALL women are beautiful in some way, makes me sick. You know what those words are and my TCS sisters know exactly what I mean!

Words I love:

ethereal
angelic
misty
firelight
impeccable
languish
mirage
sultry
rose
cured

.....having listed those, I will now write a limmerick to amuse myself and whomever else:

There once was a kitty named Black
with white socks he would walk on my back
he purred and he groomed,
and never assumed
that he'd always be part of the pack.

This kitty had talent galore
he'd leap from the lamps to the floor
he never was bad,
and oh, how we had
so much fun that we wanted some more!

So he had what was called super heart
always happy and sweet like a tart
white socks in the air
cat nip mice everywhere
my best friend, we were never apart.

There is one word I hate above ALL others, and I don't even know if I can use it here on the board. It is not a swear word or a 4 letter word but when I hear/see it, I just get almost sick to my stomach. It is the "V" word that stand for a woman's "private parts". There was also a very popular Play using this word as the first word, The "V" Monologues. I HATE HATE HATE that word.

Oh I love limericks!!!! I used to write very naughty ones for this neurosurgeon I used to work with. The last time I saw him he told me he still has em under his desk blotter in his office...glad my names not on them. I like Haiku too. We should start a Haiku and/or limermick thread. One poster, posts a limerick/haiku then a subject, next person writes on that subject and repeat! Feral Whisperer you are an inspiration and I loved your limerick! I just love the limerick meter!

Words I hate:

Gotta agree with everyone who said c*nt. Why anybody would use this word is beyond me; it just turns my stomach.

I also detest: liver, bladder, ignorant, and sty just cause they sound awful. I also cringe with I hear "Snoop Dog Talk" Fo Shizzle my Nizzle (Or however you spell it...it just sounds stupid.)

I love the words: imp, kangaroo, lizard, kitty, peanut and squirel. And I have always thought Persnickity (?Spelling) and onrey are fun to say.

When I read this I laughed so hard I almost wet my pants.
The next thing I did was call my mom and we laughed so hard we both almost wet our pants
. Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m one of 7 kids and all of us have language related learning disabilities. My father will be the first to admit we inherited this from him. When they were naming us my father told my mother “Any name is fine as long as it is 4 letters or less†he wanted names he could spell. We all have made a huge effort to overcome this, but writing a short sentence is a struggle. Now Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m getting credit for writing a limerick!! YEAH COOL Itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s the best thing I didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t write.

The above took me, no kidding, about 45 minutes to write, check, recheck and recheck again. And still I know there are errors
. When it comes to writing Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m not inspiring Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m perspiring

Thanks anyway
