OK, I know this might open a hotbed of responses, but here goes.
I used to use the Frontline for large dogs for my multiple cats by portioning out in a syringe the correct amount for cats. The active ingredients for dogs and cats were exactly the same, just the amounts differed. I checked this out on the manufactures website and got the whispered word from my vet. (As in- she said "I'm not supposed to say this but...")
But Merial no longer makes the regular Frontline - just Frontline Plus. Active ingredients for cats - Fipronil - 9.8% (s)-methoprene, 11.8%, the rest inert. For dogs - Fipronil - 9.8% (s)-methoprene - 8.8%, the rest inert. So more methoprene for the cats - not the other way around. But still, I would love to hear from anyone else who might be sharing frontline plus around.
When it was just Frontline, I was saving $120.00 a MONTH by portioning.

I have heard that the dog Frontline Plus is not safe for cats - Frontline was OK but not the Plus version. I use Advantage instead - it was also whispered to me how to divy it out to multiple cats. PM me if curious.

I've been using Advantage that way, too - don't know about the safety of Frontline Plus in cats.

Unless your cats have ticks or you bathe them very frequently, the Advantage should do the trick.

Totally incorrect.

Frontline Plus is absolutely safe for cats.

Every single time I've ever done a comparison between the different products, I continuiously come back to Frontline Plus being the best product for my needs.

I enjoy the water resistance of Frontline Plus over Advantage.
I prefer the tick protection that Frontline Plus offers.

As far as concentrations go....I know on the dog side, the concentration is the same no matter what size you get. But the total amount of Frontline Plus varies. Kinda like a half-gallon of 2% milk vs a whole gallon of 2% milk. They are both the same thing, just a different quantity.

Frontline Plus for cats has a higher percentage of active indgredients, so if you can find out exactly how much is in a monthly treatment of Frontline Plus for cats, then you could use the same exact amount of Frontline Plus for dogs, albiet with a reduced effectiveness. HOWEVER you would have to be precise with the measurements. Probably not practical, or worth the associated risk of using a product contrary to its label.

Bottom line:

Frontline Plus is a good product, and if you want to use it for your cats, get the Cat specific Frontline Plus.

Advantage is also a good product, if fleas are your only concern, then Advantage will work satisfactorily.

If ticks are a possibility, or if you want to actually kill flea eggs also, then Frontline Plus is a better product.

Just keep in mind that the Dog version is less potent than the cat version.

The last time I was in to my vet's office, I heard my vet also saying to another client that the ingredient that was for ticks in Frontline for dogs wasn't safe for cats. I haven't personally looked at the ingredients or analyzed any of it; I've been using Advantage for cats.

Hi,

I also heard you can use Frontline Plus for Dogs for cats. This comes from someone who works with a feral cat foundation. She told me to get the largest size available for dogs and to give each cat .5 ml. I just did it for the first time, I'll let you know how it goes. By the way, I ordered a 6 month supply from http://www.petproductsontheweb.com for $45.00. It comes from Austraila. Same stuff - it's all made in France.

For Advantage, cats up to 9lbs get 0.4mls, cats over 9lbs get 0.8mls.
For kittens, much less of any flea med. usually only 0.1-0.2mls

Hope that helps.

I dont do it with Frontline (it doesnt work for me). But do it with Advantage. My vet marks the syringe with a permanent marker to show what amount I should put on each animal. It works fine for me. But I wouldnt guess on my own.

I've done the research and it should be safe. I prefer to do this with Advantage, though. Using the big dog size of Advantage I end up spending about $2 per cat dose - as opposed to about $12 per dose! Big difference.
