Hi! Being a mere college student, I am continually looking for ways to cut costs. Currently, I use Everclean cat litter, but I'm curious to find out if any of the cheaper brands (Step Fresh, Arm & Hammer, etc.) are any good. I'm a bit leery about the quality of those sold in supermarkets, and also worried about high amounts of silicon (I read in TCS that silicon can be damaging to cats, and even their owners). So I just wanted to know if there are any "cheaper" brands out there that work well. Ideally, I'd like to try World's Best one day, but for now, I'll have to settle for the less pricey stuff!

I use stall dry- because I have horses, and it is what I use in their stall and I find it works really well in litter pans as well. All you do is remove the solid waste and then stir the stall dry to absorb the urine odor. You can buy a large bag of it for $9.00 if you are in horse country that is, and it works really well and lasts a long time-

This may not be as great as what you can get in horse country, but I really like Arm and Hammer Super Scoop Fragrance Free. It's great because everything clumps up and scoops right out everytime, even the urine, leaving a perfectly clean box! Just add a little every few days. I never detect any odor at all, and it lasts a really long time. I change the liter and thoroughly clean the box about every 3-4 weeks, not because it needs it but because I just feel like I should.

I've been thinking of switching over to Arm & Hammer. The dry-stall stuff sounds interesting. I live in San Luis Obispo--I think that's pretty horse-country enough!

Just want to say that we've also had good success with Arm & Hammer Super Scoop litter for our two cats.

We have tried Everclean (as recommended by the maker of our LitterMaid litterbox), World's Best Cat Litter (cats didn't like it), and some other brands, but we found that nothing has clumped and controlled odour as well as the Arm & Hammer. And the cats are comfortable with it.

By the way, if anyone is interested in other deep discussions on litter and automatic litterboxes (who isn't?
), check out this site: http://www.litterbox-central.com/forum/

I dont think I have tried the Arm & Hammer, but I use Fresh Step and I really like it. It clumps well, and controls odor better than anything I have ever used.
Plus you get Paw Point for free food and things. I am saving up for the Free Flow water fountain. Its 52 points I think, and I have about 30 points so far.
You get 2 or 3 per box.

I have heard very positive comments about FreshStep from a lot of people; some even swear it's better than Arm & Hammer. But unfortunately, FreshStep seems to be unavailable where I live.

What's strange is that FreshStep is made by Clorox, the same company that makes EverClean litter, which is available almost everywhere. Go figure.

I use Arm & Hammer as well. A 30 pound box costs about $12-$13, and often times Target has it on sale for around $10. The fragrace is too strong for me (and the kitties) so I use the unscented and mix in some of the Arm & Hammer deodrizing crystals. We're all very happy with it (=

I bought a box of the Arm & Hammer Brand--seems to be working great, and my cat Noki doesn't seem to mind the new litter. Thanks so much for your suggestions! I shaved about half the cost of litter by switching!!
