For the THIRD time, in my life, I've broken the little toe, on my right foot. While grocery shopping, this morning, I whacked it against a pallet, that was supporting a huge case of watermelons. I saw the case and the melons but, not the pallet underneath.

That toe was already crooked and misshapen, form the two previous breaks and now its swollen and purple. No high heeled pumps, for a couple of weeks! I KNEW that I should have worn sneakers, instead of flip-flops!

Now, for the thorny question: WHO do I sue? The store, the manufacturer of the pallet or both? After all, I've ALWAYS wanted to be the recipient of a Stella Award!

Ouch!

Back in 2000, I ran into the wooden leg of my parent's couch and broke ALL four little toes on my right foot. It hurt so bad I got nauseous. It actually hurt worse than being attacked by fire ants...which is saying something.

You said the toe is mishapen. Is it hammer toe? If it is then it's more prone to being broken. You can have surgery to get it fixed. Surgery that involves...well....having the toe broken to reset it to a normal shape.

Ouch! I hope your little toe feels better soon.

If it were me, I'd sue my mother ... for making me so klutzy.

Ouch Cindy. I don't know the laws of your country but in this country it would be the store you would sue, because they have placed it in a position that makes it difficult/impossible to see, therefore they are the negligent ones. Three times, that is so unfair.

If you were wearing flip-flops, your suit will probably be thrown out of court. I have a "broken toe story", too. My parents used to have an enormous black Lab that attached himself to me. Back then I only visited every other year, and always wondered if he'd recognize me (he wasn't a friendly dog with visitors; in fact, he had to be locked up). One year I visited, and he was standing on the landing of the steps when I got in from the airport. He definitely knew me, and took a flying leap to greet me, landing with one paw directly on my foot. Picture 110 lbs. of dog landing on you. I hobbled around for a few weeks, and then went and got Xrays. I got really weird looks when I explained that a dog had stepped on my foot. My big toe was broken, and now when I see how crooked it is, I always remember Shea.

Actually, the lawsuit comment was typed, with tongue very firmly planted in cheek.

I was going over my grocery list and concentrating on what I wanted to buy and didn't notice the pallet, under the watermelons.

I'm going to buy a pair of steel-toed boots, to wear the the supermarket!

That toe is misshapen because the first fracture was a "clean break". The toe was bent at a 45-degree angle, from the foot. A year later, I stubbed it and caused a compression fracture. The callouses on the healed fractures have caused the malformation. Now, with another compression fracture, it'll be even lumpier. At least, it didn't warrant an ER visit - I just wrapped it in cotton and taped it to the next toe.

Ouuchie...I know exactly how you feel. I broke my middle toe and first bones in my foot on Tuesday just gone, by tripping over my mothers high heeled shoes at home ! It hurts like hell ! Here's a hint I've discovered since my incident - though you probably know it by now - Painkillers are your friends !!!

Hope you heal quickly !!!

Peace, Love, and Happiness, Always
Sonia

If you wear a normal width 6.5 or 7 (can't remember the size off the top of my head) - boy have I a pair of loafers for you! Wore them once, my "flintstone" feet weren't very comfy, I had to get a WIDE pair. If you are interested, PM me.

Thanks for the offer but I'll be OK. I can get by with sandals or huaraches for a week or so. My job doesn't require dressing up. If needs be, I'll pull out the walker boot, that I use when my tendonitis is flaring up.

So far, ibuprofen and elevation have helped. Pearl, wagging her tail and whacking the toe, haven't. I'm not the only klutz, in the family! That dog has a HARD tail.
