So in the past month I re-arranged my living room to allow for a new keyboard stand... And I made a big mistake... I put a shelving unit with electronics on it near one of the windows in my apartment and the new keyboard stand doesn't let me put the seat all the way under, and my cats love climbing the keyboards now.

I've been using cat repellant spray to try to keep them off the gear, but so far it's not really working... Anyone have any luck keeping your cats off a surface that they don't belong on? In the past, I've just made things inaccessible to them, but that's not entirely possible right now. I will be moving the problem shelf up a bit so it's not easy for them to get on, but they will still be able to get on the keyboards.

There is a program that will deter cats off your keyboard. I have heard it works let me see if I can find the link.

OMG is that funny! I'll have to get that! I have two systems that have slightly compromised keyboards, though for the most part I've got them out of paws way.

I was talking about audio keyboards actually though. Here's a picture...

They run over me to get to the window and when they're done in the window to get down they either run over me... or they get down by walking on my audio gear on the shelf... They never showed any interest in the keyboard before when it was just on it's own stand... But now that I have the 3-Tier stand... They like to go up up and away! And I really can't blame them... They're cats!

Have you ever used any of those sprays or other stuff to keep cats off things?

Ack! I was thinking computer keyboards.

I would be hesitant to use anything wet on keyboards- have your thought about those electronic devices you can sit on the floor that make ultrasonic waves to scare cats off? Though that might make your cats neurotic or something?

No I didn't know about the ultrasonic wave machines. I'll look into that tommorrow. This is really the only place in the house I don't want them to be... and I'm still considering shuffling things around some more as my preference would be to have the house cat-proof. Isabelle has almost knocked down my effects processor a few times today! She's the queen climber in the house though.

I've been spraying small amounts of the deterrant spray on a cloth and then whiping things down with that... so far it hasn't hurt anything, but it also doesn't last more than a day and I question the toxicity of this sort of thing. The ultrasonic wave thing might be ok so long as it doesn't project too far into the room.

Per usual, you have the good ideas!!

There's no place like home
I have added cat perches in front of the windows in rooms where I don't want them climbing on other things. Then I patiently redirect them to the perch everytime they climb on something else. If they don't get it right away, I will add bubble wrap or double sided tape on top of what I don't want them climbing on. Eventually they get it.

I definitely need some window perches to encourage the cats to hang out in front of different windows. And I like the bubble wrap idea too!! That's neat!
