Hi, my name is Marley and I am new!
So glad that I found this forum! I have several questions. My husband and I adopted two kittens (brothers) now 12 weeks old! They are adorable and their names are Tom and Huck. My question is, Huck doesn't seem to want to eat much. Tom on the other hand eats like a little hog. Huck doesn't seem to want dry food and with some experimenting i found that he will eat tunafish. I can't immagine that feeding him this will be good for him. But now I am just happy that I found something that he will eat. So I took some dry food and mixed it up with tuna and he seemed to have eaten a little more today. The thing is that he yells often. He yells bloody murder when we are in the kitchen because he knows that is where we prepare food. He yells when he jumps on me and settles himself on my chest. He yells when I look at him! Is he just a vocal little guy or is there something bothering him!? He is VERY effectionate. We went to the vets on Monday to get him the rest of his shots and deworming. Could that have effected his appetite? Also, does any one have any experience with allergy medication? I have a nose that will not stop running after we adopted them. I am NOT giving them up, so I have to find something that will work for me. The current ones I am on (clarinex) does next to nothing. Might be time to find a different doctor! Thanks in advance!

Welcome to TCS. Have you talked to you vet about your concerns regarding your cat's vocalizations and eating habits?? It is always a good idea to rule out anything medical. I'm sure that others will have some suggestions for you..by the way...congrats on your cats. This "may" help with allergies:

Hello Marley ! Looks like you got it posted this time! Can't tell you much about kitties that don't eat, 'cause I have a bunch of hogs around here, don't know much about the allergies either, 'cause I think my kitties are allergic to me sometimes,,,but I can almost guarantee that someone will come along here that knows something about one or the other or both even. Hope you enjoy your stay!

Welcome to the site!

Deworming can cause upset stomach because all dewormers are a mild poison to kill the worms.

For allergies, Zyrtec is fantastic!

For the rest, I'll move this to Health & Nutrition where people more knowledgeable than I can help you.

Thanks so much for all of your replies! I will go to my doctor and get the medicine you mentioned! I am desperate! I kinda figured that the deworming and the vaccinations might of been the cause. I was also wondering, how often do you feed the kittens at this age? They are 12 weeks. What kind of diet have you used. And is it ok to mix dry food with wet food. Can I continue giving them milk and tuna fish and how often to do you recommend I do that! Have I told you how HAPPY
I am to have found this forum!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Hi there! I used to free feed my kittens with a good quality kitten food (and kitten foods are different than regular for adult or senior cat foods, with a higher protein content for one..necessary for growing kittens) and supplemented with wet food at least twice a day.

I may have missed this but are you giving cow's milk? If so, that will be one cause of diarrhea, as cats are lactose intolerant and can't properly digest cows milk. If you really do want to give them milk, you can give them Catsip or Lactaid milk.

Tuna...wouldn't do it. A kitten should have enough appetite to not need a coaxer of human tuna. If you think this kitten is a "loves all things fishy" kind of cat, try an occasional treat of a fish based canned cat food - at least it will then still have added taurine and other needed vitamins and minerals.

Mix wet with dry...sure! But you need to pull and discard this after 20 minutes in hot weather (my preference) or an hour in normal weather, as spoilage will begin with the wet food. I once, a long time ago, gave a litter of kittens the trots by not pulling the wet food up soon enough - lesson learned!
