I have a great Persian (pure bred) cat, Princess Jazzmin who is 5 years old. She is alone home all day and I was told when I got her that Persians were pretty solitary animals and that she didn't need a friend. I would think after 5 years she wouldn't want another kitty around, but I am willing to entertain idea if it would cheer her up. I wouldn't get another long hair, so I am wondering if others have had experiences when "adding" to the family. Hopefully in another year I will be home full-time, so I can give her more attention....but not sure if I am enough.

I think as a general rule two is better than one, but when your cat is 5 and been alone all the time, maybe she is OK as it is. And only one year until you will be home full time.

My daughter has a pure bred persian, and compared to my two Norwegian Forest cats, hers is a very non-active kitty, and I have heard that persians are like that (but I do not really know). Anyway, if you decide to have another cat, maybe it should be the same personality/temperament as the one you already have, so she won't get stressed by too much action.

Just some thoughts though, maybe other people here have more experience with persians.

Are we (owners) ever ENOUGH for a cat??
LOL...I have 2 cats...had them since they were 8 weeks old...I think kittens really do better as a pair...but since your girl is 5....well, I would suggest that if you go that route..you find an orginazation that will allow you to do some form of "foster to adopt". Anne is right....you need to find one of similiar temperment and age (a kitten is usually overwhelming to a 5 year old cat).

Good Luck.

We've been told, and have found that two cats are better than one. It helps if they're the same sex, the new one is younger than the new one, but a kitten may be too ambitious. We took in a 9 year old male, then got him a 4 month old male companion who was "special". His hind legs weren't very strong so we knew he wouldn't be "too much" for our 9 year old. They got along splendidly!
Friends of ours have had similar experiences starting with one and adding a second. Be careful with introductions and try to adopt from a place who will let you bring the new cat back if it doesn't work out in 30 days. It helps to take your time and be choosy about the new cat, kinda like letting them pick you, then you're more likely to have success!
