Spent the whole day working in the yard. Well, almost, I got rained out for a couple of hours around noon. But I got at least 6½ hours in. When I decided to call it quits for the day, I sat in a lawn chair drinking a beer and listening. A Swainson Thrush, an American Robin, a Goldfinch, a Chestnut-Backed Chickadee, a Purple Finch, two songbirds I couldn't identify. Over and over. Then a raccoon sauntered across the yard. God this must be heaven on earth!

Too bad my husband and I couldn't have shared this experience more frequently in his last four years. But I won't dwell on that; we did share it on rare occasions, and for all I know he may have joined me this afternoon. The weeds may have been up 18 inches all around me and I may have a couple hundred hours ahead of me to get it back in the shape it was five years ago, but life if good!

So tell me, what is your little heaven on earth?

Dusk, when the sun is just below the horizon and everything is bathed in a ruddy pink glow. Or a few minutes later, when everything is tinged with blue, like your looking through a blue glass. Particularly the second, when I am at home in the country and the lightening bugs are starting to stir. Dusk is my favorite time of year, especially in the fall. Oh, thats my other favorite, fall. A nice fall evening about 60 degrees, just cool enough to need a sweater. When the leaves are all turned and fallen and there is the smell of chimney smoke and burnt leaves. Thats my favorite. That's my heaven(s) on earth.

Growing up in Maryland I can feel the soft hills and dusk that surrounds her in PA, in the twilight. But being a westerner for some time now, the heaven on earth I know is the eastern rim of the Cascade mountains out here where the land is perfection in winter: all crystal beads and soft flakes, trees made of soft white cotton and silence so delicate you can hear your heart beat against the sky.

I know your husband might have been with you today; animals are carriers of the spiritual world, one of them was sending a message. Look again. I truly believe that if heaven is what you felt, then it was in front of you at that moment.

I grew up in the mountains of Southern California (Lake Arrowhead). My heaven on earth would be to have an afternoon nap in front of the fire with my daughter and my kitties with the snow falling outside. All of us snuggly and warm with the windows frosty and that amazing silence that a thick snowfall brings. The only sound the crackle of fire and the rumbling of kitty purrs.

Doesn't get much better than that!

Today was a little heaven on Earth for me. I am still on vacation, technically, so I got up at 9, to no alarm laid in bed for awhile listening to the fish tank humming away, petted all the cats as they sauntered onto the bed one at a time for good morning kisses,( I wonder if they know that Friday I have to go back to work?) finally got up, fed the starving kitties,(can you tell by their pics? LOL!) picked up the house, put the dishes in the dishwasher, started a crockpot of cajun shrimp creole, and basically humdrummed the day away. When Brad came home we ran to the Quad Cities to pick up some fish we had put on hold yesterday for our salt water tank, and then came home, ate, cleaned up from that, played on the computer and that's about all. that is my heaven on earth. no time limits, no rush rush, no need to do anything, just doing things as I want to do them when I want to do them. AND no work to deal with. that in itself is the greatest little heaven on earth!

I love it if i get up really early for breakfast when the sun is shining and it's so quiet.

Also, around 6-7 p.m. when the sun is still there and a bbq gets going

And your husband was with you

What a beautiful thread. I have loved to read the posts in this thread. me being greedy, I have three heavens on earth.

First one is when I am falling asleep and my furbabes are purring down my ears. I can't think of anything more beautiful and peaceful

Second one is sitting by a stream in a forest, the smell of the forest is so natural and exciting. I love the dark green colours and sitting so quietly that the wild life run out to take a peep at you, even coming next to you, a little rabbit or squirrel sitting by your side and the sound of the rippling stream and singing birds - that is heaven.

Third one is in the past. When I lived by the coast in South Australia and fostered children with medical and psychological problems they were so loving and I was never happier (we had furbabes of course).

Heaven for me (and hubby
) is when it's raining outside and we are in bed, he playing on the PS2 me reading/sleeping and the furbabes in various sleeping postures in bed with us. Our bed fits into an alcove, and a couple of years ago we moved it slightly forward and made a kitty bed behind our heads...kitty heaven.

I hope you don't mind if I bump this up. It is such a beautiful thread, it would be a shame for it to 'get lost'.

Heaven on Earth for me is a cup of French Vanilla Coffee on my back porch, listening to the finches chatter over seeds, watching the ferals have their breakfast,
seeing my roses blossom, and having my insiders join me at the windows.

I have to agree, I think the best things I have in my life are the things that I find in nature on a beautiful summer day.

My idea of heaven on earth right now is sitting out in the backyard with a cup of tea and a good book, and watching Jamie scamper around chasing bugs, garter snakes, etc.. We have a bench under a pergola covered by wisteria and roses - it's just perfect right now.

For it is heaven on water. I live near the water. My favorite thing is to be on a sailboat on anchor as sunset with a nice breeze the boat swaying with gentle music and good friends.
