I am working on my student worksheet for my degree plan and I cannot figure out exactly what classes fall under the "Social Science" category? Would my General & Educational Psychology fall under those? Does anyone here have any experience with this?

Hmm. When I was in college, "social sciences" included psychology, sociology, economics, and anthropology, but it really depends on the university you're attending. Have you asked your academic advisor about this? I know I graduated with far too many "social science electives", not that it hurt.

Your university should have an on-line catalog (or undergraduate bulletin). In the bulletin you will find a page that lists all courses that meet the requirements for the Social Science category. Believe me, you do not want to get this advice from people who are not familiar with your university because every school has its own way of doing and thinking about things. What may be true in my university may not be true in yours!

If you can not find this information on-line, and if you can't find your advisor, please contact the chair/director of your program. This person works even in the summer and will know all about the schools requirements.

The only one I know of for sure that is a social science is Sociology... Does your school have an online catalog of classes? If so maybe it splits them up into divisions? I mean, like maybe it seperates the maths, englishes, social sciences etc, so then you would have a listing?

Do you have a university course catalog distinguishing between "behavioral" and "social" sciences? This is something that differs from college to college. Have you contacted the registration office? Somebody there should be able to advise you.

In my university, psychology fell under both social sciences and physical sciences. You could get either a B.A. or a B.Sc. in psych, depending on your area of concentration. And to further confuse things, behavioural psych was a science course. So you definitely need to get the final word from your program advisor.

I was so hoping you would be online to see my question!!

I have looked through the catalog several times and I can't find anything on the classes underneath those categories, it just tells me the hours I need for them. If you guys want to look to see if ya'll can find it--the website is: www.uhd.edu I will wait a day or two before I call the director. I hope she writes me back though because I am having a hard time figuring out if I am out of electives already!! Btw, my degree is: Bachelor of Science in Interdisplinary Studies.

I finally heard from my advisor, this was her response: social sciences include psy, soc, history, economics, political science and some CJ. another category is social science (SOS), which can be used, too.

That helps, but not with the behavioral part...I wrote her back. Hopefully it won't take another week to hear back from her. I didn't go in last Friday since I was swamped with stuff...doesn't look like I have a chance to run that way this week either...

Oops! Sorry I missed your last post with the link to your catalog.

Since you're having trouble getting in contact with your advisor, please make an appointment with the chair/director of the psychology program. The chair will be there just about every day, so meeting with him or her shouldn't be a problem. I do advising for the other faculty all summer long because they usually don't come in during the summer. Its just something us chairs consider to be part of our jobs! So, muster up some courage and call for an appointment. Hopefully you won't be disappointed.

I do want to say that oftentimes undergraduate students are scared of us chairs because of our positions. Please don't be scared! Almost all of the other chairs of departments of psychology that I have met (and I know quite a few of them from around the USA) are really nice and caring folks. They all have the best interest of the students at heart and will often bend over backwards to make sure students are well taken care of.

So...please talk to your chair. Who knows, you might develop a good relationship with him/her, which may help when it comes to getting good letters of recommendation for jobs or graduate school!

Thanks Renee! I will do so soon. I have to go to the school on Saturday to take my Writing Proficiency Exam, so I have to go up there this week anyway. I just have a very hard time getting in contact with anyone there. I had to call the financial aid office for about 45 minutes until someone picked up. I will definitely figure out what to this week, I can't keep putting this off! Thanks again!

Oh, I am not scared of higher ups...I get along with every teacher I have contact with...just may lack of time outside of this office is very limited since I work 9-6 M-F. To meet with anyone, I have to be there right at 8 and be out of there by 8:30 to be at work, and after trying to meet with several people at school and no one ever showing up, I just get flat out frusterated
So, I will make it a point to get in contact with the chair, again.
