Hello. I have two cats ages 4 and 5 and they just have NOOOOO interest in toys at all. I wish they would play but they wont. They just prefer to lay around. Thinking back to when they were kittens they didn't play then either. We buy the toys and spend time with them but they just watch the toys looking at us like we are crazy... Any suggestions...oh and cat nip doesn't do anything for them. They get excited for like 5 minutes and then they are tuckered out. I just wish they would play!!

Maybe you aren't buying the 'right' type of toy for your cats curiousity? I know I bought all the typical toys for Nakita: furry mice, balls, etc. and she would play for a little, then totally ignore them after that.

Right now, Nakita's favourite toys are a see through scarf that I throw over one of her other toys so it is partly hidden under the scarf. She absolutely goes bonkers trying to get the toy uncovered. Also, while growing up, Nakita's favourite toy was a black shoelace! Also, I bought a really cheap Walmart toy a couple of weeks ago and Nakita loves it!

So, you may have to experiment a little to see what your cats may enjoy. It may end up costing you nothing (such as Nakita's black shoelace and scarfinterest noted above).

Do you have a feather toy?? My cats don't really go for much of the mice and balls...but the feather toy they cannot resist.

No, the feather toy is the one I had not yet purchased. I was scared they might eat the feathers or choke on them. Have you had any problems with the feather toy?

My two aren't much on toys either, now that they have each other. But for the first two years I had Red Cat before I got Purdy, he loved dashing after the balls with the bells, if I rolled them down the hall. When I try it now, he isn't much interested. They both used to enjoy the feather wand toy, but are rarely interested any more. Purdy usually likes the laser light, Red Cat chases that red dot only about ten percent of the time I try it with him. Notice that the only toys they ever express interest in are those in which I have to play an active part.

What they like the best are not exactly toys at all. Purdy loves one of those arc-shaped brushes that he can walk under and brush himself with. It has catnip in it and he is a catnip junkie. Red Cat is especially fond of one of those corrugated cardboard scratchers. My boys use these last two items several times a day.

I just read on another board about cat nip bubbles. I have never seen them but I want to get some....I think Yogi and Remi might like them because they would just float and it wouldn't seem as if I was trying to get them to play...its kind of sneaky...but I really think they would like them. Someone even suggested using a fan on low to blow them around...I am so excited.

Loving my beautiful baby girl
Sierra has also never really cared for the litty mice or balls. A while back I got her a Swat and Play at Petsmart and she loves it! It's an interactive toy on a pole with a ball wrapped in yarn, feather, yarn and a little bell hanging from a string. I agree about the feathers concern and therefore consider this a fun supervision only toy. I put it away when it's not in use. What I consider the greatest toy is her Cat Dancer! I had not purchased one prior to a couple of months age because I thought what in the world is she going to like about this little thing hanging from a wire. As soon as I presented it to her, she went wild! I use it as an interactive toy also instead of hanging it! We play several times a day now! She out lasts me! She chases it all over the place as I move it around Up and over furniture, in and out of boxes back and forth thru the house, she grabs it in her mouth and does her little rabbit kick, she loves to run around my legs chasing it! May be you would want to give it a try!

Dylan has never been a playful cat. He is more of a cuddly lay around fat cat.

But, recently I bought him a large stash of toys...feeling guilty for never playing with him. Now, most of them, he ignored completely...but there was one...that for some unknown reason, he attacks every time he sees it. It is this little fat mouse made of natural sheeps wool. (rather than the ones with rabbit fur or whatever that is) He picks it up with his front feet and throws it in the air and leeps around after it. Let me tell you it is a site to behold because he is a pretty large cat!

If you want to look into it here is a link to one place you can get it...but you can do a search on google or yahoo and just look up Wooley Bully cat toys and a million sites will come up:

Wooley Bulley Cat Toys

He also likes to play with this long furry thing that is about 5 feet long with a big bunch of feathers on the end. You drag it along the floor like a snake and he stalks it before pouncing on it. As long as you monitor the cat while they play with the feather toys they are fine...and they seems to really get the cats attention.

I find that cat toys are defined by the cat. It is often a found object that they like.. try a flashlight on the carpet if you don't want to by a laser. If she's excited about the flashlight.. the laser is a definite yes.

Paige is also in love with receipts.. we drop a couple on the floor every once in a while, and those tend to entertain her all day every day for a few weeks.

She also likes TP rolls, and boxes with 2 open sides so they're like a cat tunnel
Crumpled paper is also fun.. often we leave our junk mail where she can get to it, so she can pounce them. I haven't tried tin foil balls, the lose sort, but I've heard that'll keep 'em going.

Her favorite toy though is her terry cloth mouse that we call her baby.

turtlecat: I agree with you 100%

Loki loves boxes and paper shopping bags, he loves tops from the milk containers and wrapping paper rolled into a tunnel. The only toy he really likes is his feather on a stick - that always winds up in the food bowl *LOL*

Try home made toys.

My kitties are scared of ANY balls, won't touch the stuffed animals (they look too much like balls
). The only things they will play with are strings or feathers. We have a shoe string with a strip of plastic bag on the end that they LOVE. I bought a big fuzzy tail with a wand at petco and they're scared of that. I bought the wand with the feather on the end and they actually detatched the feather from the wand, and then played with the feather for an hour. Silly kitties
