hi
i have 2 kittens around 8 wks old. one of them is on amoxil drops for an upper resp infection and NOW they both have ring worm. i didnt realize that is what it was till i noticed i had a ring like rash and went to the dr and he said it was ring worm... so i took the kittens again to the vet and he gave them a pill i need to crunch up and give a piece to each day and then some spray to spray on the balding areas... BUT it seems that in the 3 days we have been doing this more spots are popping up on them.. i was curious if anyone had any experience with this and would know if its supposed to get worse before it gets better? they are already quaranteened in one room with each other. the spots they had didnt get bigger just new ones popped up...

any help is greatly appreciated...

Ringworm is extremely hard to get under control, and once the owner and the cats have it, well look out- as it is very contagious. I encountered it one time, with a litter of kittens. By the time the fungus had run it's course everyone in the house had it, and all the kittesn in the litter and the mom cat had it- oy vey! I hope to never had to deal with that again.

This is a pretty good website about it:

Talk to your vet about using Program (Lufenuron) in high doses to fight the ringworm. Recent studies have shown it to be very effective against fungal infections. Also using a chlorhexidine scrub like Hibitane on the affected areas can help fight infection and help reduce the spread. Remember that ringworm is very contagious to humans so minimize contact with the kittens and wash your hands well. A healthy immune system can usually fight ringworm. That is why children and baby animals are more prone to it. Make sure the kittens are dewormed and being fed a good quality, well balanced diet as well-Meghan

If you want to get rid of it on yourself VERY quickly (I'm a massage therapist, and have actually had ringworm on my thumb and had to take 2 WEEKS off of work
) use Monistat's external creme and it will get rid of it FAST. It should be gone in a month, TOPS. When my cat had it I had to give it a special bath and apply creme every day for a month. He also got quarantined from the other kitties (thankfully none of them got it).

I fought ringworm in my cats for a couple of years, and after my cats got sick from the Griseofulvicin just resigned myself to constant cleaning & bathing. Then the vet tried Program, and it cured the problem! Definitely worth a try, and safer for the kitties than Fulvicin.

oh my gosh a couple of years of fighting ringworm???? our vet told us to keep them alone for 2 wks only. i am not sure what happens after that. i guess the hair is supposed to stop coming out and spreading? i hope the fur starts to grow back quick my poor babies have bald spots on their faces. does anyone know actually how long it might take till the fur starts to come back? i miss holding them BUT of course i am the one to caught it from them so i cant.

thanks so much for all your advice

It turned out that it was in the soil of the yard in my apartment, and although my cats are indoors, occasionally one would dash out & roll in the dirt, restarting the ringworm cycle.

It is very important to make sure that you get the house thoroughly clean, though, to avoid reinfection.

The hair takes a few weeks to grow back in, depending on the individual cat.
