Does anybody's cat sniff around an area and then proceed to make an odd face? My Cliff will sniff an area and then sort of look at me with his mouth hanging open a bit. What I call his yuck face. Some of the areas I've seen him do this around are places where he's had "accidents." Others, I'm not so sure. I haven't found signs of anything, but that doesn't mean they aren't there.

My cat Yogi does this just after she has been sniffing Remi's rear end (our other cat)...lol. That sounds so bad. Remi is a clean cat..but it's just so funny how Yogi's mouth just hangs there a bit after the act. I call it the stinky face...

They are just catching a scent is all. It leaves them in this type of face freeze momentarily as their brain processes what their nose has picked up.

It's called Flemming.

There is an organ in the roof of a cats mouth called the Jacobsen's Organ, and it linked to both taste and smell.

Cats will do this when they smell something interesting and they want to get a better idea of what it is.

Rosie did this to my ex boyfriends mothers feet!. I was mortified at the time because i used to think it was because they hated the smell until i read what it really meant

My mother-in-law was watching a documentary about lions, and apparently, they smell through their mouths also. It's so funny when our cat does this. I don't understand why they enjoy smelling disgusting things, like shoes, socks, and other animal's butts!

I love watching them make those faces! I use them as my Test Subjects sometimes, when there's a weird substance on one of my books. I quickly suspect that its pee, and I'll let one of them sniff it (whoever is nearby, that is) and if their mouth hangs open, I toss the book. If they act bored or disinterested, then I read the book. One of these days, I have to get a picture of the look... lol
