Cockroach that is...
What did I get myself into?! The apartment looked nice, we keep it clean, and this is the second I have found in my sink in 2 weeks! By law, is the landlord required to exterminate? UGH. I HATE BUGS.

All it takes is one apartment to have them and they spread.

Put out the "Combat" roach bait stations and they'll disappear eventually.

We went through this years ago when I was stationed in San Diego. Moved into a nice place on base, got up the day after we moved in and saw 3 of them. We sprayed (bug bombed) after removing the furry critters and then laid the bait stations. It took a few weeks but the little prehistoric bugs moved out eventually. I wish you luck.

I second Jeff - you can keep your place neat as a pin, but if your neighbor's a pig you'll have to deal with 'em too.

I don't know if the landlord is required to exterminate, but if he's/they're worth his salt, they'll be willing to pay for a round. Then you'll have to follow up w/roach baits to make sure they stay gone. Talk to the landlord and see what they're willing to do to clear up the situation. since you're a new tenant I would think they'd want you to have a good impression and be very helpful!

Good luck. I hate those creepy crawlies, myself.

Bay leaves! Putting bay leaves everywhere in your apartment won't keep them out of the whole complex, but it will keep them out of your home. Why attract them with poison? That's just...meh.

In all the apartments I have lived int he landlord was responsible for exterminating. And boy have they racked up a bill on me. We had a huge beehive living in our wall that they had to get rid of, and now I am calling for spiders. I have seen 4 in 2 days

I deforested my bay tree the first time I saw them. I am holding out hope that they are the waterbugs that look like Cockroaches. (I live near a river and we only saw two in our sink in three weeks) Regardless, they need to LEAVE. I hate bugs!

I don't know how cat-safe it is (I didnt' have cats when I was using it) but Boric Acid powder kept the water-bugs out of our house quite well. Just a squirt along the doorsill and no more intruders!
If they're black beetle-looking things, they're water-bugs. Cockroaches are brown-black, and more flat, disc-shaped, no hump in their back (and long, wispy antennae)

I was going to suggest the boric acid, too. It makes the creepy-crawlies EXPLODE!

Years ago, my next-door apartment neighbors moved out and their six-legged "pets" moved into my place after the management fumigated theirs. Management had to fumigate mine, too.
