I bought a H style harness and attempted to put it on Simba my Siamese, since he's so curious. I eventually was able to get it on but I wasnt' sure if I had it on properly. Whatever the case, I took him out on my frontporch and the minute he heard the machines working on the houses (I'm in a new development where there is house building), he jumped up towards me like, "Mom! Hold me!" Then he wanted back in the house. I think the next time I'll try the harness is if I go to PetSmart to have him explore there-all the cat toys and to make sure I"m putting the harness on correctly. I know Faline won't tolerate a collar, I tried one for her when she was a kitten, and she got it off. She gets her excercise chasing a toy stick and climbing the 6 foot cat furniture.

When I lived near the beach in San Diego I used to put a harness on Toes and walk him. The store owners loved him and would let him come in and he'd walk on the sand as long as a dune was between him and the water. If you walk a cat, a harness is required because they'll choke themselves on a collar. I also had one of those adjustable leashes that can be really long or really short depending on where we were.

I have tried three different harness types so far. Since she is such a small cat at 5 pounds, the regular harness did not fit her. This summer, Nakita will be wearing a most fashionable bunny harness! This is the only harness that perfectly fits her small frame, and she loves it so far.
Russian Blue, thanks SO much for this little tidbit! I've been contemplating a harness for Bella, as she's becoming more curious about the outdoors each day and she doesn't mind her collar, but since she's just over 6lbs and very slight, I was afraid a cat harness might be too big. A bunny harness or ferret harness might just do the trick!!
I'll buy both and see what she prefers!

Most indoor cats aren't sure what to do when they're first outside. Take it slow, let them get used to it, and they'll learn to like the change of scene.

Flexi leashes (or some other good retractable kind) is best for cats. Leave the 6 foot leashes for the puppies
