So far out in left field I got lost
I came home from work and Dakota is limping really bad. His leg where the wrist is, is swollen and he want put any weight on it. He even tried to bite me when I went out there to check on him to see what was wrong. God he has a lot of teeth

I have already called the Vet. The Vet told me to give him 3 baby asprins and confine him until in the morning.
The vet told me that is all that I can do right now for him until then. Does anyone have anykind of advice of what I may be able to do for him besides what I have already done?

I'm sorry Cathi I can't help with advice. Would be too much afraid of doing the wrong thing if it were me. Hope Dakota is Ok, hopefully it will be a sprain. Good Vibes coming over.

Cathi, no offense, but I would get another vet. He tried to bite you because he is in pain and he needs an x-ray to determine the damage and not just 3 baby aspirins. Don't even try to splint it or he will bite you. Just get him to a vet so they can sedate him and see exactly what it is he did to his leg.

No offense taken! Thank you MA I am going to call the other Vet in the office. This one that is on call tonight isn't my favorite to say the very least. I have him resting in the shop right now away from any of the chemicals that Ken uses in there. Kita is whining wanting to be with her buddy but tonight she will have to get over it. I don't want them getting into any playing at all.

Cathi,
I am so sorry for Dakota, he must be in so much pain
I have to agree with MA in that the vet should have been more helpful. I hope Dakota is ok, and that it is just sprained and not broken. Please let us know.
((((hugs))))

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
BTW - we'd be on our way to x-rays at an emergency vet. If it has to wait until tomorrow, so be it, but without an exam, there's no way a vet can tell what's wrong with his ankle. I'd not only consider trying a different vet in the same office, I'd consider a new vet, period. That's just plain irresponsible advice.

Hope he's OK soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Asprin and most drugs similar to asprin are very toxic to cats. If a vet ever tells you to use asprin for a cat, get a second opinion from a different vet ASAP.

Dogs however....they are much more like humans, their system tolerates a wide variety of drugs. Asprin will not normally have any adverse reactions in dogs, when given as directed.

Asprin for Cats? NO

Aspring for Dogs? If the vet says so, it is ok

Baby Aspirin is ok to give for a cat Spotz , but only if a vet is telling you . I have given baby aspirin before to my cats , so I know it is ok . I had a old Persian and he had a stroke , in the beginning I had to give him one (1) baby aspirin twice a week and then I had to give him a 1/2 ( half) baby aspirin once a week to thin the blood . I just had a cat come down with a inner ear infection and had to call two weeks ago on a Sunday , after talking to the vet I was told to give one (1) baby aspirin to the cat and it sure did help him as far as I could tell . And the next morning I went to the vet with him .

Blondie , I think the 3 baby aspirin will help him for the pain as far as I know . So your baby should be ok for right now . But asap you can go to the vet , what I think and know you will do anyway . I hope everything will be ok with Dakota and I am in hope it is not broken .

Only in EXTREME and highly specific cases.

I undestand that it can be done, but the practice of using asprin is severely limited in practical scope. Unless there is a specific reason for using aspirin, the risks are too great. There are alternatives, but those require a veterinary prescription.

http://www.vetcentric.com/reference/...fm?ARTICLE=188

Aspirin toxicity in cats is very easily reached, and the side effects to an otherwise healthy cat, are at best Severe and at worst, Fatal.

Looking elsewhere, the commonly accecpted Maximum Dosage (for a purrfectly healthy kitty) is somewhere around 4.5mg per pound. A baby aspirin is usually 81mg, so unless the cat weighs in at 18 pounds or more, even a baby aspirin is a risky overdose. (This is a best case dosage)

No vet that I would trust my cats life with would ever use Asprin for a cat. There are much safer alternatives...just not a huge variety.

Oh yeah we will be there before the doors are officially open in the morning. I really wish that we had an emergency vet here but our town isn't big enough for that yet. I have been out to check on him several times tonight and right now he is resting quietly and comfortablely as he can. I know there will be little sleep for me tonight as I know that I will get up several times to go and check on my baby boy
Better put the coffee pot on.

I hope it is a sprain and not broken, I couldn't possiably imagine what he did to it, unless he and Kita girl got into one of their more rowdy play sessions

When my vet recommended to give my cat aspirin she initially recommended that I give her one, but when I pressed her on how many milligrams specifically (not knowing that all baby asprin is the same 81mg) she recommended 1/2 a baby aspirin (40 mg).

She also said that I couldn't give her any more asprin for another 3 days. It worked great and thankfully Zoey hasn't needed any more, else I would have taken her to the vet to get another pain patch for her.

After reading the posting out here about diffusing oils around cats I'm more aware of just how toxic human stuff can be for cats. This forum is awesome!

There's no place like home
Cathi - big hugs to you and Dakota tonight! Please let us know first thing tomorrow how he is doing when you get him home from the vet. A puppy his age is pretty rambunctious and I'm sending positive vibes that it is a bad sprain from over-playing and not a break! Spike and Sam send tail wags, licks and get well woofs your way.

I just checked on Dakota. He is still resting as comfortably as he can right now. I let Kita in to see him so she knows that he is okay. I will keep everyone posted on him and will let you all know what the vet says in the morning.
