Hi there - i'm a new kitten mommy - just adopted a brother and sister from a local shelter - they are part purebred himalayan and part? - the mom was a purebred who got outside and did the deed
they are VERY CUTE!!!

i've never had kittens before - always been a dog person and have a 90lb golden retriever who thinks she's one of the kittens!! we've had them for about a week and they are all starting to get along already!!

anyway....the vet said she'll spay and neuter them at 5months - do you think i need to worry at alll before then? i love them dearly and want to make sure i do the right thing!!

Hi! Welcome and congrats!

You've already started off on the right paw by getting 2 kittens; kittens are always best in pairs as they entertain one another and are better socialized than single cats.

Golden retrievers are known to be cat lovers. My father specifically went searching for a pure bred golden when we were kids because we already had cats. He went to the breeders and there was one puppy with a kitten riding on his back - he came home with us and was known to be a kitty cuddler! He and his best friend (a large tabby named Tiger Boots) were inseperable. When Thumber died at 13, Tiger Boots was inconsolable and died at the age of 8, three days later.

As far as speutering, 4-5 months is normal, but they'll let you know when they're ready!
When your male becomes sexual mature he'll start humping everything that doesn't run fast enough...including stuffed animals, his sister and anything else he can find!
The female will start yowling (especially at night) and become desperate to get outside if she's ready early. Just don't go PAST 5 months. Males will start to mark their territory (spraying is very difficult to stop once it starts!) and females will throw themselves into heat over and over again every couple of weeks if they don't get relief. She'll become incredibly annoying and drive you out of your mind

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of kitty lovers!

Welcome to the site! Congrats on adopting your new family members!!

5 months should be fine to spay/neuter. Boys generally don't reach sexual maturity until after 6 months, so you should be safe there.
Girls can be early or late bloomers, but 5 months should be safely before her first heat as well, and that will give her the best health benefits (getting spayed before her first heat). However, if you see them doing things kittens shouldn't be doing, get them in ASAP (probably won't happen, but just in case....).
