Hi,
I have a 10 month old silver tabby Persian, and am having real problems keeping his 'bib' and eye area un stained. I bath him at least once a month and I have tried most 'solutions' on the market for this problem, but with no success. I have also tried optrex, but the white in his coat is still stained brown. If anyone have any other solutions to this problem, I would much appreciate the advise.

I have a persian, and we took her to the vet and got eyedrops for the leaky eye thing. And I have the coat problem as well- so I'm interested in whatever answers you may recieve.

This is a copy of part of a post by a member herre, Talia:

I noticed his eyes are badly stained. You can use a boric acid solution to help remove some of the stain. Be very careful not to get it in his eyes. Boil 1 cup of water add half tsp of powder boric acid. Let cool then wipe underneath the eyes. You could do this twice a day for a week. If you do not want to use the boric acid you could use renu or a saline solution. Sometimes raising the food dish helps limit the tearing. Mine seem to tear when their heads are down.

This might sound stupid but where can you get Boric Acid? I have a cat with similar staining.

Thanks for your suggestions....
For anyone interested, 'Optrex' eye wash contains boric acid, and is gentle on their eyes. This seems to be ok with the eye staining prob but has not 'cured' the brown staining on his 'bib' and mouth area. I have also tried the ultra white stain removing shampoo, but still my kitty looks like a brown/blue tabby rather than white/blue!!
If anyone is interested, the ultra white stain remover shampoo came from purrsonaltouch.com. Has a great range of stuff for kittys.

Try optrex eye wash, it contains boric acid, and is gentle on their eyes.

I picked up this Petgold Tear Stain Remover Wipes yesterday for my cat Amelia and I have to say they do a wonderful job of cleaning up the gunk around her eyes. I especially love the fact that when I am done, I just toss the wipe. The wipes are like those acne medicine wipes, ie they're little circles. The only thing is that it does not say on the container what is on the wipe, which makes me very nervous. So, after I'm done wiping around her eyes I've been using Opticlear to "rinse" off whatever the stuff is just in case.

Eye staining can be a problem with persians! Especially light color ones and I have a couple of those! I wash their eyes daily with warm water and a cotton pad or wash cloth. I also use Eye Envy which is absolutely wonderful! Works even better then the petgold stuff! It's pricey but lasts forever. You can get it at www.eyeenvy.com

I was looking at this eye envy stuff and ofcourse I'm confused as to how it's to be used. But beyond that I had another question...

Is there anything I can use after having cleaned around Amelia's eyes to protect her skin and fur from accumulating goop after the cleaning? I find that every day I'm cleaning her eyes and the goop that comes out dries out almost like a scab. I thought there might be some either oil or vaseline type substance made for cats that I could put around her eyes after cleaning it that would help the goop not stick to her skin and fur so much. Any thoughts?

Eye Envy does just this very thing! At first I had to use it daily to get the really bad stains out but it is a formula that not only cleans the stain but prevents staining and gooping. The other thing to help gooping is the sterile saline drops in her eyes. Just plain old sterile saline drops keep the eye lubricated enough so you don't get all those clumps of goop. Some vets will occassionally prescribe a triple antibiotic salve but I don't like the salve at all. It's like vaseline. If I have to use an antibiotic in the eye occassionally I make sure to get antibiotic drops and not ointment. My cats prefer the drops too. They HATE the ointment!!

Back to the Eye Envy. It comes as a bottle of liquid and a container of pads. you pour enough of the liquid in the pads to keep them wet (they don't put the liquid directly in the pads anylonger because it leaks in shipment and dries up). You just wipe around the eyes with the pad and throw it in the trash. That's it! Then you can get the powder too but that really isn't necessary unless your cat is a white show cat! The powder is just applied with a cotton swab or finger tip under the eye where it tends to stain the most. Just helps to lighten the stain further. It's kind of like eye shadow. LOL I don't notice a huge difference using it on my cream color kitties.

I hope that helps. Of course there are other products out there you can try. The eye envy is just the one that I found to work the best for us.
