Hi there - My 2 overweight British shorthairs whom i adopted last Sunday are eating like birds. Its very odd. They are now quite settled, however I measured out 70 grams (35 each) and for 2 days they hardly touched it.
there is very tiny droppings in the litter tray.
I reckon they have only eaten at most 15 grammes each.
any ideas why and what do your cats eat a day ?
These 2 are pretty active up and down the stairs ...

I can see why you'd be a bit worried. Did the place/person you adopted them from tell you what food they were used to eating? You are right that they didn't get plump by eating like birds

My guys are free-fed (which I may be changing 'cause they are getting too plump!) and I've noticed they simply graze frequently during the day. I feed a quality dry food with wet food on occasion.

The little rabbit droppings you describe sounds to me like kitties who might also be a bit constipated
so...my suggestion would be to find out what they've been used to eating for most of their lives, and if these tiny little stools are normal for them. If so, you can discuss with your vet a good way to combat the constipation (there are products to be used weekly or food items you can use such as adding pumpkin to their diet...plain, unspiced).

It *is* important that you get them eating. Unlike us, cats can not live off their fat without becoming very ill (if they do not eat, within a couple of days they can - not will but can - develop a serious illness called hepatic lipidosis (probably mis-spelled that)...so...if you can not get the information on what they ate in recent years, begin trying different foods to tempt their appetite. Even if they are still settling in, they should be eating more than what you describe.

Please keep us updated?

i too adopted a 9 year old cat in january. Sometimes she eats and eats, and then other days hardly eats at all. I think she is bothered by hairballs.

Anyway, every month i try a different food with her. Alot of people on this website recommended Royal Canin (i got for sensitive eaters). However, how about trying a little wet food to stimulate their appetities, preferably a wet food by the same maker as the dry food your using.

Boy, it's hard to answer this, I have several cats on special diets, the rest free-feed from the same food bowl. My one kitty who is pre-diabetic eats 1 1/2 oz. (aproximately 43 gms) 3 times a day plus some dry food, my fellow with IBD who eats Hills Z/D eats about 1/2-3/4 of a cup per day.

I think it never hurts to take a new to you pet in to your vet for a good overall exam (and I'd take along a stool sample too). I like the suggestion of you adding wet food if you are currently only feeding them dry.
