Hi there! I'm new to the board, but could use some advice. I got a cat from the humane society. She is a himilayan/persian mix. She's a show cat of about 6 years. We brought her home mid-March and assumed she would take time to adjust to her new home, but she still hides from us and runs away when we even walk by. Is this normal?
Thanks,
Bill

Hey Bill...welcome to the site. Sounds like your girl may be shy...and each cat does take it's own time to warm up to it's new home. I would just let her hide as long as she needs to...and let her come to you at her own pace.

Sounds more like a stray type of behavior. Some things you can try. Sit down on the floor as much as possible. Play classical music softly all day long if you can. Take off your shoes when you walk around. Sit near her when she eats and read out loud to her softly. Play with a toy on the end of a string with her, just walk near where she is hiding with this toy trailing, make several passes, and when she pounces, just keep walking. Don't peer under wherever she is hiding because it will scare her. If she is hiding let her hide. Has she been to the vet to be checked out?

I am new to the site and am still learning how to use it. I recently adopted a six year old, possible stray from the shelter. If the cat is timid and doesn't yet like to be piched up, what are recommendations as to how to get the cat to a vet?
Thanks,
Angiem

Angiem,

Train your cat to like the carrier by always leaving the carrier out with the door open and a good fluffy towel inside. Give her treats in the carrier every day. Overall, make the carrier a pleasant place to be. This way she will be less anxious about going into the carrier when the time comes to go to the vet.

Good luck!
