Looking for a little TLC. This is a big step for me because I never ask...I GIVE! I've been depressed for the last 3 or 4 weeks now, and I am sick to death of it. Many of you know I am Bipolar. Not too long ago, I was in a manic state, and now this. Saw my psych doc Mon and he added another med, I'm now on 5 meds in all. I don't mind that, they all work for a while, but then poop out. My doc is great, if it was up to me I'd have him for my reg MD, my GYN and psych all rolled into one. Just faxed him some info on Trans-Cranial Magnetic Stimulation, it's similar to electro shock. but hot nearly as, well for lack of a better word harsh. No seizure, no anesthesia, no short term memory loss. I see him again in 2 weeks and we will talk about it. I'm sure he's aware of it as he is also a professor at NYU. TMS is still in the experimental stage, and is being done at about 12 centers around the country and abroad. In NYC it's being done at Columbia University. My question...does anyone here have experience with it, either first hand or otherwise? At this point I'm willing to just take the placebo effect. Basically I'm at my wit's end...I wish I could cry...but the meds flaten me out!

Barbara, I am so sorry you're going through this difficult time. As a fellow RN, I trust you have thoroughly researched the options you are considering. Wish I had more advice to offer. I am here for you any time you need support or just feel the desire to talk. Many, many
to you and lots of snuggles from Sierra! Stephanie

to you

I am so sorry you are going through that . A nurse told me once to take vitamine B 12 or a B complex in for depression , my husband was depressed for a while . He took the vitamine B complex for a while and was doing good . I would go into a health food store and ask them what would be good to take for depression . You don't have to tell them that it is for you
. When you get up in the morning tell yourself this is the best day of your life , it will help you after a while . Only try to think positive thoughts and try to ignore the negative thoughts . Do things you really like to do and focus on all the good things in life . I am sure if you do all that , in time you will feel much better
. And remember to come in here to talk and to cry , you will always find a big shoulder to lean on
And don't forget to smile in the mirror when you see one

I've also read great info about the B vitamins. Also, try checking into Omega 3 fatty acids! Have you read about St. John's Wort?..Except it can't be taken with certain meds.
I repeat, we're always here for you!

Yes, have you tried any alternatives, like supplements? They're not always going to work, especially in severe cases, but I've heard good things about St. John's Wort. (I don't get much sun anyway...)

In any case, I hope you find a solution that works for you.

Barbara,
for ASKING.

I don't know anything at all about TMS, I'm sorry, but I HAVE seen some pretty great (okay, miraculous) results from alternative approaches. I have seen things that, ten years ago, if you'd told me stories of, I would have said, ah, that's a fairy tale. But I've also experienced pretty amaxing healing myself, with homeopathy, since then, and so, well, I'm pretty sold, as you can tell!

It's certainly not fun if the meds only really work for a time, and considering that medications sometimes also have "side" effects that aren't really healthy or welcome. I agree with the suggestion to look into vitamin supplementation, and especially orthomolecular therapy. I realize that to an RN this is probably "pop psych" but I recall reading an article about Margo Kidder, the Superman actress, and her successful recovery from severe depression with orthomolecular treatment.

But, I realize, this is what would reflect MY view of things, and may not work for you as a possibility to consider. Hey, it's my best advice, use it, or not!

Linda

I am sorry you are going through this hard time. It must be very difficult. I have not heard of that therapy, but I have a suggestion. Do some research on cranio-sacral massage. It is completely non invasive, and people that have had it seem to be better for it. It balances and stimulates cranial fluids, and has known to help chemical imbalances that cause things like depression. If it does not help your condition, the least it will do is make you feel better physically. I hope you find something that will help.
