Oh..I know....I was really impressed that NYC planned to go no kill in 2008. And Ed Boks is really a wonderful person. Of course....NY already has the BEST shelter in the country:

Tompkins has the LOWEST euthanization rate..and their state of the art new shelter is opening on June 5th.

There's a group called the 'Mayor's Alliance' (I'm not sure if it actually has anything to do with the mayor's office however) which has become very active in sponsoring public pet adoption events. They have at least 6 more scheduled this year, in the major city parks as well as at the cat show at the garden in the fall. (The group from which I adopted my 2 meezers participates; I made a banner for them to use on their booths
)

I'm also encouraged by the expansion of pet services companies here. When I pass a large Petco, my first thought is the possibility of them making contributions to politicians to make/keep NYC pet friendly, especially after the recent fiasco with my landlord wanting to bribe building workers here to 'rat out' cat owners. I hope that Petsmart comes into the city as well!

That's wonderful news! But wow - 40,000 dogs, cats and wild animals picked up annually? That's mind-boggling.
