I am thinking of getting Dori microchipped in the next couple of weeks. My vet does it for $40.00. But was wondering how many of you have them?

My indoor/outdoor cats are not microchipped, but I've been thinking about it after reading about it on this site. It would probably be a good idea especially for the one who likes to roam. The other pretty well sticks to the house and yard, but in the past I've felt Red Cat thinks the whole town is his territory. He hasn't roamed as much lately, though. Now that he is middle aged, maybe that seems like too much work.

I want to get mine done, but I'm scared that something will go wrong with them. My cats never go out, but it would be a precaution just in case. They do it for $25/cat at the clinic I use.

Me too Abby. I am so worried something will not go right. I know that everyone says it's safe now, but what are the possibilities of in the future it being found that they cause some sort of problems..... That's my worry.

Exactly! Or they will get an infection or something strange that only happens 1 in 1 million that they do and it will be all my fault. I'm such a worry wart!

I guess I am considering it because I have heard so many stories of animas (dogs and cats both) getting lost and then being found years later because they were chipped. Dori never tries to get out and I keep her in all the time, but theres always that 1 in a million chance that something weird will happen and she gets out and gets lost. I would not want to be thinking, if only I would have chipped her my chances at finding her would be better. I know that just a tag and collar won't be too muchhelp because Dori keeps popping it off under the couch!

My cats wont even wear collars anymore. Somehow I find them unbuckled and hidden. I gave up on it after the 5th day in a row of my two Houdini's. I know what you mean about the one time they do get out. I always worry that mine will slip out at a weak moment and I will never see them again. Then I would be feeling guilty that I never got them chipped. darned if you do, darned if you don't. They both have a small tattoo in the ear where they were spayed and neutered but I have read on here that they fade.

That's one thing Dori is good about is wearing collars. Maybe because I started her out as a kitten, but when I put it on her she sticks her head out so I can easily get to her neck. She's such a good girl
I think she keeps getting it caught under the couch when she tries to squeeze herself out from underneath. (I am actually trying to figure a way to keep her from going under there, she is gonna get stuck) Anyway, another concern I have is my vet's office just started doing the microchip thing 1 month ago. When I called I asked if the fee included the registration/sign up fee for and no one in the office knew
then I asked if they used the chip that can be read everywhere nationwide (I saw the post about Banfield using another) and she they didn't know.
I asked her if Dori needed to be put to sleep to do it and she had to put me on hold to ask!
Makes you a little uneasy.

You may have to. The "EU Animal Passport", which was supposed to be issued starting next month, will be issued in October, as things stand now. It's a combination of the "Vaccination Passport" previously issued and an official identity document, and will be required for any dog, cat or ferret traveling in the EU. The pets must be microchipped. What I haven't learned is whether the old "Vaccination Passport" will still be issued for those pets who never travel.
JC only goes outside on a lead or his enclosed balcony, but he is nevertheless tattooed as well as microchipped, and wears a breakaway reflecting collar with an ID tag.

How can anything go wrong with a microchip? They just put it under the skin and it's done. I've only seen one microchipping with my own eyes, but it was simple. I didn't know how it was done before that, but the vet showed me the thing they use, then she put it between his shoulder blades and that was it. More peaceful than vaccinations even. It seems like one vet needs to learn about microchipping LOL... If you're in the US, if it's HomeAgain or Avid, you're safe. Most shelters and animal control in the country use scanners that can read both.

As for long-term effects, I can't even imagine any, as the glass doesn't interfere with organic matter or whatever. Not to mention this technology has been around for quite a while. In '98 or '99 I first read about it, and I wasn't exactly on the cutting edge of animal care.

A vet will probably charge more, as they're doing individual cats, than a rescue organization's clinic.

BTW, most cats can get breakaways to pop off--it's very annoying, yes. Try an all-elastic collar instead.

Also, if tattoos are done, I'd prefer that it be done on a leg, not an ear. I'm not sure if it applies to cats as well, but I've heard of bunchers ripping or cutting off ears to get rid of tattoos before they sell dogs for experiments.

All four of mine are microchipped. Their pet insurance won't let you claim unless your pet is microchipped, but the best thing is, the policy covers $50 towards it and most vets here charge around $30-$40, so it's fully re-imbursed.

My vets office called me back this afternoon to answer the questions they couldn't answer on the phone earlier today. The lady appologized and said that the girl who answered was new. She said that it costs $40 plus an exam fee of $30, because it takes 10-15 minutes of the vets time, then you have to pay $15 to register with Avida (I think I got the name right) and that is the nation wide one. She did say that their chips can't be read in Europe, so if Dori gets lost and swims across the ocean, they won't be able to read who she belongs to
She also said they use a large needle to insert it and it does hurt, her exact words were "some animals are babies about shots and those are the ones that seem to exagerate the pain of the microchip". I am seriously beginning to rethink my vets office. I think they are getting new people and they did get 2 new doctors, and I don't think I like them much. They don't seem to have the compassion for animals like Dori's old doctor she saw

So far out in left field I got lost
Right now I don't have Ceasar, Oscar or The Sammycat microchipped. Ceasar has to go to the vet Saturday and he will be then. The Sammycat will be when he goes in August for his 6 months checkup. Oscar will have his when I take him in for his shots. Gee I guess in a way it's good that they all have there appointments spaced out so it isn't so high at one pop

Loving my beautiful baby girl
I have been seriously considering having Sierra microchipped, but I too am concerned that something could go wrong. With this being a relatively new procedure, I'm especially concerned about the possible long term consequences.
