I was playing with Dori with the laser pointer last night and realized that one of the Cichlids was darting around his tank to follow it also. I was thinking, no way. I aimed the laser on the wall behind the tank and sure enough he swam around following it. It was so funny! I never thought fish would do that.
I think I made Dori a little upset because I ended up playing with the fish more than her

fyi: I did not point the laser in the fishies eyes

It was funny because it didn't work with the goldfish who are in a seperate tank, but it did with the cichlids. The big bully cichlid is the one who followed it everywhere, the smaller cichlid was interested in it but everytime he tried to follow it, the big bully would just slightly move towards him and the small one would go back to hiding

Usually anything that shines or reflects light will attract fish. That's why fishermen use those expensive, shiny lures to catch fish. Of course, Charlotte jumping on top of my aquarium also attracts the fish. They rush to the top, thinking it's feeding time!!!

PS: they are guppies who apparently aren't too smart.

Sounds like you have one like my big red one. He is such a bully and will chase anything in the tank. Oh and he will even shot water out of the tank at me when I am feeding them. I have already told him if he keeps that up we are going to see what is on tonight's menu

Squirtle, you've found a new way to entertain the fish! LOL Do you think they think it's food? What did Dori think of the fish dashing about?

Cathi, that's funny. I hope it just means he really loves you!

I don't really know if they think it's food or not.... but it seems to be the only thing on their minds, since anytime someone goes near the tank they assume feeding time positions
Dori sat down next to me and looked right up at me and kept chirping, she was anxious for me to go back to playing with her
She seems bored with the fish nowadays.

Large cichlids particularly are very intelligent and capable of showing off that intelligence in ways that us dumb humans can understand. And yes, when they want your attention (ie when you piss them off) they can spray water at you with very good aim ^^

Brads cichlid (oscar) Opie (that's his name) will bite Brad while he is cleaning the tank, or if he is feeding his eel. So Brad has to watch Opie to make sure he isn't going to try to bite him while his hand is in the tank. He got me good one day I didnt' know he had started to bite, and was feeding the eel and he took a bite of my hand! I wasn't to happy. Now that's ALLLL Brads job. I won't put my hand in there at all anymore...
