I went on my daily walkabout to check on the ferals today and noticed a really bad smell coming from an adjacent apartment complex. I thought it might be a cat, so I investigated, but it looks to be a dead raccoon in the woods behind the complex.

(people must think I'm the crazy self-appointed animal guy)

It's not easy to get to - I was going to leave a note for the building superintenant. Or call Animal Control or the Department of Sanitation? (It's private property)

It's rotting a bit. Will the ferals stay away? Any obvious health hazards for them?

I'm not going to touch it... I've disposed of a dead squirrel in the past, but rotting raccoons are beyond my area of involvment.

I'd try department of sanitation - if they can't help you, try your city/county offices to see who takes care of this in your neighborhood. Ferals typically won't eat rotting flesh if they have a good food source (such as yourself). Coyotes and dogs typically get the carcasses in our area (unless we bury them first).

In my neighborhood we're on our own. We had a deer (car kill) down the road and had to move it ourselves. If you have the room to bury, pick it up with a shovel and bury the poor guy. We always put a rock on top to make sure that it can't be dug up again, then remove the rock after about a year.

I would take a shovel pick it up and bury it off in the woods under at least a pile of leaves or something. If anything just to get rid of the stench and give it back to nature.

That's what we do around here when there's been a problem. (Don't see a smiley holding its nose.....)
