I wanted to check around and see if anybody else has headaches everyday. Me and my sister have headaches every day, and we both are taking like 4 -5 OTC painkillers(mostly naproxen and acetominophen(sp?)) to deal with it. We went to the doc and he said that its probably caused by me using too much OTC drugs, and that if I stop taking them they should go away. Anyone body else have problems with headaches? Any tips on how to get rid of them without PKs? Theyre really annoying.

Thanks,
Brandon

I used to get headaches alot, not every day but I would say 3 or 4 days a week. I used to get migraines alot also. I used Imitrex (sp?) for a while and it helped. I don't get them anymore I think I grew out of them...... I had them from the time I was 17 until about 20. Have you ever been in any sort of accident- car, sports etc? I was in a car accident when I was 15. I went to a neuro-muscular therapist (massage therapy) and that helped quite a bit as well.

Regular headaches can be a number of things. Have you been checked for migraines? Or sinus headaches (I get sinus headaches as a symptom of my allergies, not runny nose/itchy eyes/etc.)? A doctor should help with determining what type of headaches you have.

I get migraines, associated with my hormonal cycle. I have a preventative medication to take during the week I'm most likely to get a migraine. I also have medication to stop moderate and severe migraines after they've started. Rebound headaches can be caused by regular use of painkillers.

I'd strongly encourage working with your doctor to find out what's causing the headaches in the first place. There are a lot of good medicines available and you don't have to suffer.

Thanks. So what exactly is the difference between a headache and a migrane? Squirtle, I haven't been in any real accidents just small ones. That reminds me though, they get much worse when I work out, but I think thats normal of anyheadache. I doubt its my sinuses, but you never know. Ill look into rebound headaches, because I do use a lot of OTC pks.
Thanks for the replies!

Peace,
Brandon

Another thing about the otc pain relievers is that using them too often can cause stomache ulcers. I had one when I was 18 or 19 and my Dr. told me it was from me taking too much advil. That's when he started me on other things for headaches, like the therapy and I even went to a chiropractor (he didn't do anything for me, I think they work for some people but not all).

A migraine is a throbbing headache, usually localized to one or a few spots on the head, that is accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light, loud noises or movement. Migraines are often preceded by an aura, which can be flashing lights in the vision, phantom smells or a feeling of "wrongness". Migraines can last several days.

Headaches are less severe than migraines. The pain doesn't throb and isn't localized. Also, the nausea and sensitivities aren't present with a headache.

This is a good informative site:

I feel for you Brandon, I used to get headaches every day and migraines at least once a month, and they got worse when I was pregnant - migraines every day then. I couldn't function.

And then a friend recommended a chiropractor and so I thought, whats the harm, my headaches are bad enough as it is. Luckily my insurance covered it. The chiropractor said that my neck bones were out of alignment and so did some things and I have been almost headache free ever since - once in a while I will get a headache, but not as much as I did before. It is amazing.

I try and not take any OTC meds, but there is a remedy that I use when I have headaches - it is a migrastick and you roll it on your forehead or your neck whenever you have a headache and the results are almost instantaneous - amazing! It has peppermint in it, I think. I bought mine from a health food supermarket, there should be some in the one nearest to you. If you don't let me know.

Watch what you eat MSG or Monosodium Glutamate (sp)? Chocalate, onoins, aged
cheese, nitrates(as in bacon, ham, hot dogs) can cause headaches even migraine's
I had to find a Chinese place that does it without MSG, Dorita's flavored chips some
spicey potato chips have it in them.
I suffer from BAD migraine's throwing up the vision problems, the light thing
I take Axert for them sometimes it stops them in the start. I sometimes have to go get shots to stop them.
OTC will cause rebound headaches try not taking any for a day or two
see if it gets better or worse. With rebound it takes a lot of will power
to suffer thru it but it sort of like a drug problem the body craves more and more.
BRANDON I AM NOT SAYING YOU OR ANYONE ELSE HAS A DRUG PROBLEM!

Brandon, did your doc. check your blood pressure? That is another cause for headaches. No matter what your age. So is stress. There are so many things but I feel your doctor should have asked you more questions.

For those that suffer from migraines, ask about Fiorinal (generic for Butalbital). It works well in a lot of people and is a non-narcotic.

I get headaches every single day. Most are tension headaches because I really hate my job. I also have high blood pressure and if I eat salty stuff, my head just pounds away. I have put myself on a low salt diet and so far in the past two weeks I have only had one headache.

When I had my horse wreck I was paralyzed by killer headaches. Nothing touched them either, worse than migraines they literally stopped my world for hours even days at a time. Finally I went to an accupuncturist. Went and say him twice a month for 4 months and I have NOT had one headache since. The first thing he did was kick me off all meds I was on and put me on a 48 hour liquid fast, then he went to work on me with his needles. I would come home from treatments and sleep like a stone. Find the right accupuncturist in your area and make an appointment. Worked for me.

What I mean by the right one is someone who has been over to the Orient and studied the craft, not just learned it in the United States.

Be careful with the pain killers, because not only can they cause ulcers they can also be addicting.

Unfortunately, because of severe pain from endometriosis I have literally become an ibuprophen addict. During my period I sometimes have to take 10 per day in order to function. And even when I'm not on my period sometimes I don't feel "right" unless I take a couple each day. On the plus side though, I heard that ibuprophen is good for your heart.

Cougar, A neurologist I used to work with believed in caffeine for migraines, provided it was given at the very onset of the headache. In fact many of the RX meds containe caffeine..it contracts the blood vessels in the brain. So next time try a very strong cup of coffee. It does not have to me a mirgraine..a migraine usually has some prior warning signs though, like an aura, or some nausea. It can't hurt.

Trust me when I say this: You will KNOW when you have a migraine. They are not fun to have.

Actually if you look at the ingredients of Excedrin Migrain it is basically ibuprophin (Advil) acetomenamenaphin (Tylonol, Excedrin) and the equivalent caffeine of one strong cup of coffee.
