Diners chew over $1,000 omelette

A restaurant in New York is offering something special to customers with expensive tastes - a $1,000 omelette.
Diners at Norma's in Le Parker Meridien hotel can now order the "Zillion Dollar Frittada", a Spanish omelette with lobster and 10oz (280g) of caviar.

Restaurant manager Steven Pipes said it began as a lesser dish, but his chefs "decided to have some fun with it".

"We thought we should really make something that would be a spectacular feast for a celebration," he said.

The restaurant has a bell which will be rung whenever a customer orders the 3,000-calorie dish, topped with sevruga caviar.

"We like to do things that are a lot of fun, a bit tongue in cheek, but also have quality," Mr Pipes said.

The first $1,000 dish was sold on Monday, to a British man who works "in the media", he added.

"I asked him whether he would finish it and he said that he would, for Queen and country."

There is a budget option, for those without the means to splurge on Manhattan's most expensive single course.

A smaller version of the Zillion Dollar Frittada retails at just $100.

I have never really been a fan of caviar myself. Usually, I only have it when I am on the plane. I find it more fun playing with it, you know taking the caviar and mixing it up with all the little other stuff that usually comes with caviar then carefully placing it on the cracker. I guess it is an acquired taste. Much like truffles?

Living in the land of not enough time
One of the local news shows sent their roving reporter to watch the fritatta being made. First they brown potato slices and place them in a circle in the bottom of a ring mold. Then they scramble 6 eggs and make the frittatta. They top that with lobster tail slices, then pop that in the broiler to heat the lobster and set the top of the eggs. It is then spooned with a wine and cream sauce and then the 10oz of caviar is spooned into a mound in the center.

Other than the caviar, it looked luscious! It would serve about 3-4 people, but it looked absolutely delicious!

I can only eat omlette if I make it myself, (Spanish Omlette and lots of black pepper - yum!) Restaurant omlette never tastes right - I am very fussy with eggs
I've never tried caviar, but the lobster tails sound delish
