We recently took our cat to the vet, when he told us that his colon had stopped working and he had his bowles 'flushed out'. He seemed fine for about 3 weeks after, almost back to perfect health. But now, he's ill again with the same problem, it seems. We're taking him to the vet tomorrow, and there's a chance we'll be told that he needs to be put to sleep. He's 13 years old, and I've had him since I was 4. I've known him nearly my entire life and he's been like a brother to me. It deeply saddens me thinking of him not being around anymore.

He's the most friendly, affectionate cat I have ever known. He has never bitten, never scratched. He doesn't deserve what he's going through. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, I'm sure many of you can understand the attachment I have developed with my cat. I'd like to ask some of you fellow cat lovers to say a prayer for him, or keep him in your thoughts.

Thanks.

OMG you poor thing
, what you must be going through right now.

My heart goes out to you and your baby and i pray whatever the outcome is that it is a pain free one for both of you.

Keep us informed as to what the vet says.

I am sorry to hear that your kitty isn't well. We definitely understand how you're feeling.
I am moving this thread to our health forum, where we keep threads concerning feline health issues.

Please do let us know how he's doing.

Megacolon is unfortunately common in the senior cats. Some ways to battle it is to introduce good bacteria into the system, such as Grapefruit Seed Extract, or something called beni-bac (which can be found at good pet supply stores) Feeding small amounts of a good dietary food several times a day will help and keeping the cat's routine the same, not introducing new pets, or changing the household in any way will also help. Any changes will stress the cat out and could cause the internal organs to have another major upheaval.

I hope your vet does not tell you that the only alternative is the final one, but if he does, know that your cat lived a very long time with a lot of love and affection, and no animal could ask for more than that.

Thanks for the replies guys, it means a lot to me.

We're taking him to the vet later today, so I guess I'll know then. Here's hoping for the best.
