You know how you can choose whether other people can see that you're on TCS or not, I have mine set to show if I'm here. What my question is, that if I come along to TCS and read some posts and do some replying etc. and then go off for say, four hours to do stuff around the house, if I don't log off TCS or go to another web site, does it look like I've been at TCS for all those hours? Sometimes, I leave the computer on, connected to the internet and with TCS as the last web site I visited for anything up to 12 hours and I wonder if it looks like I've been at TCS all that time?

Yup, if you don't log off the internet, or change to a new website, you become a permanent resident of TCS! It looks like you've been on this site the entire time you've been cleaning house or feeding kittens.

That is what I wondered, but I don't think it shows you as being online. Well, I don't think so anyway.
I will just confuse myself!

So, in theory, the house is a mess and the kittens are starving to death! Bad kitten Mum!

Don't feel bad Susan! As much time as I spend on here in a day you would think I had no work either

Oh my, I have conducted my experiment, and yeah, it showed me as online when I closed my browser and used a new browser without logging on!

As far as I know it should show you as being online only as long as you have TCS open in a browser window. Once you close all of your browser windows showing TCS, even if you don't log off, you should not look as if you're still here.

It sounds like we all do the same thing anyway, so everyone will seem to be here forever.

When I go online, I first visit the Animal Rescue Site, then go to TCS, and afterwards check out CNN, the NY Times or Washington Post, BBC, Die Welt (German newspaper) (I'm signed up for their "breaking news alerts"), without "checking out" here. Anybody tracing my use of the Internet would probably think I'm absolutely "gaga", especially since I generally view English, German and Spanish-language sites, and regularly visit online bookstores, pet food suppliers, and "true crime" sites. Profile: middle-aged female multilingual pet freak, news junkie, "true crime" afficianado, anti-Bush activist. Are those criteria sufficient to justify detention?

Thirty years ago, my Spanish was fluent (bilingual family), but at this point my Spansh is disgraceful (I haven't used it in over a quarter of a century). I can follow most conversations and understand (in general) Spanish-language newspaper articles, but for the life of me, I have to comment in English or German. That is really a disgrace, because Spanish is very much a world language.

Ahh.... that's the tragedy that normally happens when one loses contact with a language for a long time. Regardless of what's the language its really a pity when that happens.
I myself have always been a bit ashamed of my miserable French, but I normally try to compliment that with my excellent English.
