well it certainly is interesting in this household right now...

Tipsy has not eaten breakfast or dinner today- he has either eaten a big mouse today and isnt hungry or is not happy about the introduction of a new kitten.

Cedar (yes lets call him Cedar
) has also not eaten or drunk a thing today - and has also slept ALL day - its confirmed that he has done some sort of damage to his leg. He has also had a few sneezes tonight but no other signs of cat flu. There was cat flu at the shelter so I will have to keep an eye on that.

I have had a bit of a tear tonight because both my boys are not happy!!

Its horrible when a tiny little kitten looks at you with that small innocent face and does this soft soft meow - it just breaks my heart!!
So I am going to put him in the spare room tonight and make sure he is completely warm - and hope that he is a little better in the morning.

Tipsy can sleep with me tonight (this usually doesnt happen - but my husband is away - so he gets spoilt) and hopefully he will eat in the morning.

so if you can all spare some good vibes - please send them this way

Danielle, why don't you give the vet a quick ring just so you can have your mind put at rest?!, especially if he's not drinking and also sneezing.

I know cats and kittens sleep a lot, but he should be jumping around like a spring lamb as well.

Please let us know how he is.

Thankyou so much for your advice.

I had already spoken to my mother in law who has been raising kittens all her life and she just said if he has hurt his leg then its common for him not to want to eat or drink as he is in pain. She said just to make sure he is comfortable and warm and cant jump off anything.... (presently he is sleeping in front of the fire in his bed
)

Its 9pm here - but I will of course call the vet in the morning and make an appointment asap if he is still the same. I am one of those mums that calls the vet over ANYTHING!!!

Its so heartbreaking when something is wrong though - especially when they are so young.

Tipsy has been amazing with him tonight though. Usually they need to be watched constantly due to Cedar only being here a few days - but tonight Tipsy just walked up to him, gave him a few kisses and has just slept near him all night.... ahhhhh big brother you are going to be protective!!!

I will let you know how the boys are in the morning

Danielle i would be the same. I'm a worry wort when it comes to my babies as well, in fact everyone on the site is. It just shows what a caring owner you are.

And it's lovely to hear that Tipsy has taken to him so well
.

It took Rosie a good couple of weeks before she finally accepted Sophie altogether. Now they have started to snuggle up together and Rosie washes Sophie

Let us know what happens tomorrow.

Danielle, you can try giving Cedar kitten glop to tempt his appetite:

Home-made kitten formula (Kitten Glop)

8 ounces water
1 envelope Knox unflavored gelatin
8 ounces whole evaporated milk
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons plain yogurt
1 large or 2 small eggs yolks (raw)
1 teaspoon clear Karo syrup
1-3 drops liquid pet vitamins
1 drop grapefruit seed extract

Boil the water, add the gelatin and mix well. Add the following ingredients in order, mixing well after each addition:

1/2 of the canned milk
Mayonnaise and Yogurt
Rest of the milk
All other ingredients

You can substitute canned goat's milk for the canned evaporated milk. This mixture will keep in the fridge for up to four days. It is jello-like in consistency in the fridge so you can just scoop out as much as you need and warm. It can also be frozen in ice cube trays and defrosted as needed.

Please keep an eye on him. A kitten can become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and dehydrated a lot faster than adult cats, especially one who may be coming down with a URI. To test for dehydration, pick up a fold of skin on the back of his neck and then release it. Normally the skin will snap back. If it falls back slowly or remains up, he is dehydrated. Give him Pedialyte or Gastrolyte diluted half and half with water, using a syringe (no needle) or dropper, every few hours. If you don't have any, you can make a home-made version (no diluting needed):

Home-made Pedialyte

1 cup water
Small pinch of baking soda
Small pinch of Salt
2 teaspoons of sugar

Mix all ingredients well. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Good luck!

Susan - I dont actually know if Tipsy has taken to him to well as of yet - although I have a feeling he knows Cedar is not well and therefore tonight he will 'leave' him alone. I know they will be friends eventually as improvement is noticeable every day

Thanks so much Tania

I never actually thought I should give this to him although I have known about it.

Do you think he will be fine until the morning? Its 11.30pm here although I could go down to the supermarket to pick up these ingrediants I dont think they will stock liquid pet vitamins - I am not even sure what they are

I have checked his skin like you said and it seems to be snaping back.

He will probably be OK to go without the glop tonight but you must get some fluids into him. Are you able to make up some home-made Pedialyte? Make it up, warm it a little and give him 5ml every four hours until you can get him to a vet. Again, use a dropper or syringe. Not only is this important to keep him hydrated, it will lift his blood sugar level and perk him up a bit.

Don't worry too much about the liquid vitamins, they are usually used for orphaned or unweaned kittens.

awwwww you guys are so awesome!!

you have all made me feel alot calmer - of course this had to happen when my husband goes away for a few nights - but it was good to know that everyone here would help and keep me calm.

I have made the formula and given him some - not completely successful because of course I have no droppers or anything in the house so I had to improvise - but I did manage to give him some... and now he is tucked up in the spare room on his bed with a hot water bottle to keep him warm

and tipsy is patiently waiting for me to come to bed as he knows daddy isnt home tonight and he gets to sleep in the bed

*mental note to put droppers on the morning shopping list*

now I am off to get some sleep... thanks again
will update in the morning

Tipsy has eaten a small amount this morning but would not eat out of the bowl only out of my hand - strange cats are sometimes. I guess its the smell of the bowl.

I just got back from taking Cedar to the vet. They believe he has sprained one of his hind legs
... although they couldnt tell me which one - one vet thought the right and the other thought the left.
They can not feel any breaks so thats good news. They have given him a pain killer injection and recommended lots of TLC. If no improvement in 24 hours to contact them again.

He did eat and drink a little this morning so I feel a little more relieved. However I think I will still go and get the ingredients for that kitten glob - just in case.

He is certainly not a happy little kitten at the moment... but hopefully with lots of love
and rest he will pull through this asap

thanks again everyone

Awww i'm pleased Cedars leg isn't broken, and that he's ate and drank a bit

Tipsy will come round eventually. Rosie stayed up in the spare room for a full day when i brought Sophie home, and she did'nt eat much either, and that's not like her!

Make sure you spend some quality time with Tipsy when Cedar is napping, just to let him know he's still loved

Keep us updated.
