When UTIs are fatal is when they stop urinating alltogether. If you see him going to the litterbox and straining, but nothing comes out (or if he's trying anywhere else, and nothing comes out....), that's when it is an emergency. It can be fatal because the urine builds up and is so dense that the toxins are transferred from the bladder/kidneys to the bloodstream.

Ilovecats, I don't want to alarm you, but it is indeed true that UTIs CAN BE fatal if not treated, because all those toxins that they can't pass build up in their system.
I lost my six-year old male, Bandit, to a recurrent UTI many years ago. First he blocked, we took him to the vet, did medication and the prescription diet. But times were tough and we couldn't afford to feed all four cats the expensive food anymore. Mom switched them back to a generic grocery-store brand and within weeks it recurred. We didn't know, though, because he was an indoor/outdoor kitty, and he just went off to die. I found his body three days later.

Just be sure to get him to the vet, and if it is a UTI, do whatever the vet tells you to keep him healthy. UTI's are more commonly fatal in males because their urinary tract is so much narrower than a females, and once they've had one they're more likely to have a recurrence. Sending hugs to you and to Orei. (((((((HUGS)))))))

Poor Orei! *srceams* Thank Gawd he is going to the vet tomorow!
Yes...but in RARE instances, and it can be fatal to either gender...typically male due to physiology. Same reason UTI is less common in male while blockages are more common, compared to the occurrance rates in females.

There is a theorized link to UTI/Blockages and Early Neuter procedures, but there has never been significant proof to make it any more than theory.

You will get all the answers you need from the vet [hopefully], don't be horribly worried about the fatal aspect of this for Orei, however do not delay in taking him in either. Stay calm with the vet and ask as many questions as you can think of. Don't be afraid to ask 'stupid' questions, if you don't know the answer, then the question isn't stupid.

Please keep us posted

Still says your inbox is full! Go to your inbox. Check the messages you want to delete, then go down to "selected messages" and click on the arrow to change it from "move to folder" to "delete". Then click "go". This should delete your messages and clear up your inbox. Let me know if/when you want me to try again!

You may also have to change folders to the sent box and delete those messages.

Alright the moment we have all be waiting for! YAY! I'm back from the vet! Okay, this is what happened from the way to the vet,at the vet, what the vet said, the whole story.
First,it was time to get Orei ready to go. I looked under the bed? Nope. In my dresser? Nope. Under the sink? Nope. (Hey,Orei has some weird places to hide) Anyhow,I finally found him in the closet, snuggeled in some cloths and other closet stuff. I grabed him and just like everytime we go to see the vet,he gives me a fight. After alittle feline wresting,we got into the bathroom with his portable kennel(pet taxi) He goes into the cuberts, shreads the wraping paper and meows a no vet meow. (told you he gives a fight) Finally I caught him and we were off to the vet. While we were there it was danger. A greyhound, and a cocker spaniel. Poor Orei!
The vet called us in and and felt Orei around. He seemed pretty upset about that, but who isn't? The vet took a few tests and finally after much waiting and my mother laughing over a story she was reading with my brother, the vet came back to tell us there was white blood cells, indicating infection.
You guys are right. He also took a swave culture, and tomorow he is coming up with the news of what kind of infection it is. I will tell more tomorow, tell you how Orei is doing, please keep posting,I feel so worried.
My baby is sick.
We took Orei home and he bolted out of his kennel, ready to run free!
