Hi, I am not sure if I posted on here or not about my large Maine Coon Oscar but he is having some problems and I am getting frustrated

About a month ago he had a blockage and had to be taken to the animal ER and put on a catheter. He was in the hosp. for 4 days , hooked up to iv's given meds , etc. and he doesn't seem to be doing much better. $800 later he is still peeing in the house and it's getting worse. Won't go near the litterbox. He does have access to the outdoors (I have a cat fence in system so he can't get out) but I simply don't want to permanantly keep him outdoors if he doesn't want to be.

I am thinking about kitty prozac ... will that help ? The vet mentioned it....

The vet had him on a special diet but I put him back on Purina One Urinary Tract. To be honest, the vet puts *everyone* on a special diet and he HATED IT so I put him back on the Purina One UT>

I guess what I need to know is what should I do next ? What route should I take. He is peeing all over the place and it is disturbing.

Thanks

A cat that has been blocked once can become blocked again. Since it has been about a month since Oscar was treated, please take him back to the vet ASAP just to be safe.

I want to add that I found out the hard way just how dangerous a blockage can be. Quite a few years ago I lost a young cat immediately following emergency surgery to relieve a completely blocked bladder. At that time, I was way too inexperienced with cats to realize my poor kitty had developed a life threatening problem. So please don't take any chances and take Oscar back to the vet.

P.S. Please keep Oscar on the special food, it will help prevent blockages from developing.

Another thing to try is to toss out the litter pans and buy new. Also buy the special cat attract cat litter to entice him to use the litter pan instead or alternate places

Actually I did, and they gave me meds for his joints ?
I have no idea why. They said he still has crystals in his urine and he is taking meds.

He's about 4 yrs old. He was on clavamox (125 mg) now he is on Baytril 60 and something called Cosequin for cats. The cosequin is what makes me ??? ... it appears to be some kind of joint medication.

Please talk with your vet about the food if your cat doesn't like it - never just take a cat off a prescription food, it could have disastrous results. There are a few different manufacturers of prescription foods (Purina is one, in addition to Hill's and Eukanuba, and probably others too), and if your cat doesn't like the one you were given, ask the vet if he can recommend the same version by another manufacturer - perhaps your cat will take to it better.

Since he's used to Purina, ask the vet if he can order the Purina version of your prescription diet. There are also often canned versions of the prescription food available, if your cat prefers canned.

Found interesting info about Cosequin & UTIs on the Cosequin website:

Well he's been off it now for about 3 weeks and no "disasters". He's still alive and kicking at 18 lbs
I am thinking of taking him to another vet and getting a second opinion. Believe it or not there are others who care about their cats but I don't want him to be miserable with what he is eating on a daily basis.
