IMO has been open for business for a little over a year now. In that time, we have seen many good discussions, a few bad situations, and we have all learned a lot along the way.

IMO was designed for more in-depth discussions among our established members who have demonstrated appropriate posting protocol. Due to the nature of the threads, which do become heated at times, we want to discourage drop-in posters from posting to flame or otherwise provoke tempers. In this light, the decision has been reached that no one with less than 100 posts (Adult Cat status) will be able to post in there. In addition, there is an age restriction. The main reasons for this decision are as follows:

1. :troll:Keeps the trolls at bay, the people who join the site for the sole purpose of riling up the rest of the membership.

2. Allows everyone to get to know each other prior to posting in a sometimes volatile forum. It does get heated in IMO at times, but if we all know each other, we generally still respect each other in the morning.

3. The IMO forum is meant for stimulating discussion, hearty debates and an eventual meeting of the minds, to give our members more substance to sink our teeth into.
It should embrace differences, accept other cultures and ideas and not leave anyone feeling wounded that they decided to join in on a thread. By allowing people to read IMO for a while prior to posting, we hope that the personally insulting posts will be kept to a minimum, since they will be able to see how we generally conduct ourselves toward each other.

4. The serious and political nature of the majority of the threads in IMO do not lend themselves to being discussed by minors, therefore the forum is restricted to adults only. The age restriction has been set at 18 years old.

Couldn't it be more to make the exception of allowing underage members who have a parental permission of parental monitoring? Just a thought. Then we would be able to have a filter, but not being too harsh, as it would then allow the more sensitive underage members to participate.

Just think about cases like me where I am more adult than child (mental age at least
)

What do you say?

This is a new standing rule. There are reasons behind it being implemented and it is the hope that in keeping with the growth of the board, this will alleviate some of the situations that have come up regarding that forum and take some of the pressure off the IMO Mods who are doing such a great job all the way around.

For quite some time, the moderating and administrative staff have had concerns about members who are under the age of 18. As it is, we are bound by COPPA regulations, which prohibit membership without parental permission, for children under the age of 13.

We have always been concerned about minors posting on the boards, and the IMO forum tends to get heated at times. At this time, we feel it is best if underage members are restricted to the cat care and social areas of our forums.

Well, if you folks insist...
(You can tell that I don't like being called underage, don't ya?) But I am still under my bit of protest.

Will this place still be open in Janurary 31 of 2007?

One question about the underage members...
How do we know if they are underage or not? I have noticed in the past that some members do not have they're birthdate in their personal profile.

I don't mean to cause a stir or anything, but enquiring minds want to know!

We generally can figure it out, even when they lie about their age. A lot of times members will befriend newcomers and when they find out the exact age, they alert a moderator and then the proper actions would be taken. It might take some time, but when they are young and immature, they generally can't keep the pretense of maturity going that long.

That would remove the guesswork. And, as long as people understood that the information would not be for public consumption, but just for administrative purposes, I can't really see anyone objecting to giving it. I wouldn't -- object, that is.

A new member can put whatever age they want, just like fake id's. No one is the wiser until the posts reveal that the poster may be younger than originally stated. Once they become comfortable with posting is when they usually slip up. Just because some people are honest, doesn't mean they all are and on the internet whose to know your real age? Heck, as far as you guys know, I could be a 34 year old trucker been pulling your leg all this time.

Also, whenever a new member registers, they have to say if they are older or younger than 13. Whether or not they give their date of birth is another issue - but to abide by COPPA regulations, they are required to state whether or not they are younger than 13.

But one question... COPPA is a U.S. federal law.... if the owner of the site (Anne) is in Israel, then wouldn't COPPA be unappliable, and have to abide by the Israeli equivalent of such a law? I don't know... I just have always been confused about what country's laws apply on websites. I have suscribed to newspaper sites in Spain and they give me a lot of privacy standards of Spanish law, but obviously none from the states.
