I have been playing around with the idea lately of volunteering at either the Humane Society or a place here called Safe Shelter. I really want to help out in some way. The problem is this.... I can't even go into the humane society without leaving in tears, and even at Petsmart this weekend, they had kitty adoption day and I couldn't even walk past the cages because I can't handle seeing them all without homes. I remember when I was a kid I used to try and bring home strays all the time. Mom and Dad couldn't afford the cost of taking care of the animals and so Dad usually ended up taking them and dropping them off at the Humane Society
How do you deal with the diffuculty of knowing these poor animals don't have a home and not let it overcome you, so that you can volunteer and not leave in tears?

Squirtle I think it is something you would learn to cope with, because you know that you are caring for them and they are on the first steps to finding a loving home. It must be a bit like being a nurse for children, especially when you have terminally ill children, but another child enters and you have put your energy and care to that one, and so on it goes. It takes a special kind of person and I don't know if I could do it. - Yes I could. Go for it, the only way you will find out is by joining, you are not signing up for ever no matter what, and you may regret it if you don't try. Good Luck
Just try and remember that without doing that voluntary work they wouldn't have the cahnce of finding a good home. Only my humble ideas!!!!!

I don't think you ever "get used to it", and if you do I'd question that. I have been involved with AR and HR since I was 14...and I will never "get used to" the horrors I have seen. I wonder if I have post-traumatic stress sometimes.

Sorry I wasn't suggesting you would get used to it, what I said was "You would learn how to cope with it". Because if you didn't you couldn't do it. I was a smaritan for years and I never got used to it, but I did have to learn how to cope with it, or else I could never have carried on doing it.

yeah...I know what you mean. Although some of the things I've seen are VERY hard to cope with!
