Today we had some furniture delivered. Before it happened, I told Lily all about it and told her she could hide if she wanted to. (Lily's pretty timid.) Sure enough, when they came, she was no where to be found. About a half hour, after they left, I said to DH, "I wonder when Lily's going to come out of hiding?" and then I realized - while they were assembling the furniture, the front door was wide open and left unattended!
We didn't even think about it, because we only got Lily in October, and she's not the type to try to go outside anyway. (She's an indoor cat, outdoor cats tend to disappear due to wild animals in our neighborhood.) We're still not used to having to worry about a cat getting out sometimes!

So DH and I went on a wild "cat-hunt" around the house, checking out all her usual hiding places. I looked all around upstairs, under the bed, in the closets, etc, with no luck. DH checked the basement, and then went to the first floor. Finally I heard him cry, "I found her!" and sure enough, there she was, crouched under the couch. She stayed there for another half hour, and now is flitting about, but still on high alert, poor thing.

I was getting scared reading that, I though you was going to say she had jumped in the van. Thank goodness you didn't, or rather Lily didn't.

Isn't that just the scariest thing? My Simon will do that every once and a while. He's black, so I have to get out a flashlight and shine it under things until I see his eyes reflect!

Movin' on up!
Just in case, whenever we have something delivered, I shut the cats in our bedroom. With strangers in the house, the boys are already under the bed but, Rowdy has been known to make a dash. In addition, she wil get under everyone's feet and "help". You should have seen her "helping" the refrigerator repairman, the other day!

Good idea, putting her in a room! We had talked about that for the next time we have a party. As for deliveries, I know she's going to hide anyway, though, so I guess I'd rather let her find the spot where she feels the safest. Just have to remember to guard those open doors!

Not that we can afford to get new furniture very often anyway....

IA. If you need me, just meow..
I know how you feel. The other day brad called me at work telling me that the water heater died and that he had called the plumber to come and look at it. well not thinking I went about my work day.....for a 1/2 hour, then it sank in, my cats! so I called in a panic and asked him if he'd managed to corral the cats into the bedroom and he (thankfully) said yeah they are all there, even Isis and Luna. I was so impressed! Gotta love a man who is trained well right? LOL!

the downside to this story is that instead of letting them in the outside way to the basement, he made them go thru the house, now there's dirt all over the steps going down to the basement! Oh well, I still love him!

That's what we do. We usually confine JC to the master bedroom, study and balcony with his litterbox and water when we're expecting a big delivery or repairmen.

Living in the land of not enough time
My boys usually head upstairs to my bedroom when company comes. There was 1 time when I had some repairmen over. I went upstairs 2 hours after they showed up and realized Pipsqueek was missing. They were walking in and out all morning with lumber. I searched upstairs and then started looking in all the normal hiding spots downstairs. I finally found him inside the couch. He was so scared he wouldn't come out. We finally had to upend the couch and push from the back.

I have gone through that with Dori before. I noticed I hadn't seen her in a while. I went looking all over the apartment for her and couldn't find her. I started getting so upset. My boyfriend started helping me look and finally I found her way up on top of the shelf in my closet sleeping on a sweater. I sure was relieved.
She also like to help out with the repairs. I had a guy there replacing a broken window in the living room and she insisted on being right next to him supervising.
Another time the cable guy came out and just as he walked int he door Dori, who was about 8 months old at the time, ran over climbed up his leg and crawled up to sit on his shoulder. He was suprised, but she was just keeping him in line!

Gandalf is terrible about hiding when there are people in the house...a bigger chicken I have never seen.
But last month, I had a bed delivered and didn't even think about the fact that he usually hides under the bed. Anyway I realized about twenty minutes are the delivery guys had left that Gandalf still hadn't come out yet and suddenly I realized they had left the door open. My heart dropped into my feet...Gandalf has been an indoor kitty all his life. Well I went searching through the apartment looking in all his favorite hiding places and he wasn't there. I kept calling out to him and finally I heard him meow at me...he was hiding behind the computer desk thank goodness. So needless to say I know how you felt...that was the worst ten minutes of not knowing where he was.
