Hello,
I have a 14 year old cat that stays indoors. She acts like she feels fine and none of her habits have changed. Her ears and nose feel real warm to me. She won't let me take her tempature. She had an abcessed tooth over a month ago. I took her to the vet and the abcess was drained and she was put on antibiotics. She got over that fine. She still eats like a little pig but she did that even with an abcessed tooth. Any advice? Is it normal for them to feel hot? If she has fever is there anything I can give her for it? Thanks!

The only true way to find out if a cat has a fever is to physically take it. Do you have help to be able to do this? If so, the best way is to do it on top of the washing machine, because it puts the cat up in the air about your level and you can hang on to her easily. A warm nose, ears and pads do not accurately tell you if the cat is feverish or not.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. I would have never thought of putting her on the washer.

Although it's not as accurate as a rectal temperature, you can use an ear thermometer. Also, you can now buy the 5 second thermometers at most drug stores, they are so quick, you can usually keep them still that long.
