I've been feeding Emm Whiskars dry and soft food. He seems to enjoy it, but I'm wondering how good it is for him? It there something out there that is better that I should be feeding him???

Any suggestions on what kind of food you feed your cats and why would be helpful.

Hi I don't know your financial situation, but if you can afford a better food go for it. There are lots better food than Whiskas. There is Wysong, Wellness, Petgaurd, Felidae, Sensible choice, Active life( I am not sure if this brand is still available), Innova, California natural.....there are more , but I am not sure of all the names. Whiskas, purina, Iams ect....... are all on the lower scale of cat food, it is like eating hot dogs every day or a well balance meal for humans. Hope the info. helped, any questions please ask. Also these foods are available at good pet stores, natural pet stores, and on the internet. Good luck again. Cat.

ENGLAND... LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY!
Over here in the UK Whiskas is on the lower bracket.

Purina, Iams, Hills Science Plan and Royal Canine are what most of the vets here advise us to feed them on.

The Purina etc... are more expensive than Whiskas because they don't put as many animal parts in such as beak, intestine etc...And the Hills Science Plan and Royal Canine can only be purchased here at the vets or pet stores.

Maybe it's different countries that make the brands different?

The thought of beak kind of grossed me out big time and I'm eating lunch right now.

I'll look into something new. I'll wait for the stuff he has now to be used up and do some research.

Any Canadian suggestions would be helpful.

Chicken Soup For The Cat Lover is a great food, reasonably priced, and is available in some parts of Canada. Nutro Natural Choice is a fairly easily available food in most areas, and is definitely a better quality food.

Natural Balance, Felidae, Organix and Solid Gold are the most recommended here. I feed my boys Natural Balance and Organix, they love both of them! Organix is an organic dry cat food, so it is very pricey. Whiskas is considered low grade here too. With it being filled with corn, by-products and ugh... BHA/BHT!

How much bags does Em go through in a month? What size is the bag you buy? When I was feeding Whiskas, my cats went through a small bag in no time. With Natural Balance, a 6.6 pound bag lasts the two of them a month!

lol, rest assured, beaks are the least of your worries in some pet foods. For more details, check out Canadian author Ann Martin and her book, "Food Pets Die For." (www.newsagepress.com and http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASI...271301-1826453)

Seeing as you live in Ontario, you may want to visit Global Pet Foods (www.globalpetfoods.ca). They have a good selection of premium, super-premium, and raw diets (aka BARF - bones and raw food, natural rearing diets, etc). We personally shop there for their ready-made raw foods like Amore and Pets4Life.

There are a lot of pet foods around including dry/canned Canadian brands like Nature's Harvest, Holistic Blend, Genesis, etc. You can also get an idea of the wide range of available cat foods by viewing the recent poll we started: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34999
