Hi all,

I'm new here...I've had my baby for almost a year now and have changed the type of litter I'm using for the 3rd time because he appears to be allergic to most types. Anyway, I seem to have found one that he likes (Fresh Step Scoopable Cedar), but the problem is that he seems to like it so much that he rolls around in it. His previous owner warned me he'd do that when the box was fresh, but I caught him doing it yesterday even though there he'd used the box earlier in the day.

Does anyone know why he's rolling around in there? I put the lid back on the box as that seems to prevent him, but I feel bad doing that because I can tell that he prefers to not have the lid. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Some cats just do this, they are either attracted by the feel of the litter on their skin, or the smell of it. I would put the cover back on if it were me. Rolling in soiled litter is not something to encourage.

I most definately agree with Hissy!

Perhaps you can also give him some dried catnip. Sprinkle the catnip on the floor (after rubbing it between your fingers to release its scent). Your cat will probably have great fun rolling around in the catnip which might get it out of his system! If nothing else, it is fun to watch!

My cats, and particularly Red Cat, love to roll in the dirt and also on concrete. There may be a connection. Anyone want to explain why cats want to do this?

My guess with the concrete is that he sees it as a huge back scratcher, it's kind of rough...and boy does it feel good. Franz like most cats, loves to rub his face on the wire bristles of one of his brushes (yes, he has many, as opposed to my ONE!) The brush rub I guess is also a way of marking. But umm, umm, it feels so good!

Buffy loves rolling in the litter box too! If she manages to throw some litter out of the box (she's a mighty powerful digger, yes she is
), then she'll roll in the litter on the floor. Then she'll get the "zoomies" and just explode, running crazily around the room. Its entertaining to watch, lol
