I am coming off list for a while as am struggling to cope daily at the moment with life. I have just come back from the vet without my tabby cat who has suddenly lost a lot of weight and of which the vet diagnosed total kidney collapse.
Euthanasia was the only thing for him that would give him peace. He would have died anyway. Someone please tell me we did the right thing.
I have completely had enough these days and just cannot take much more, thats the second cat I have lost as well as a relative and a dear mate in the last twelve months. Its just too much for me.
I am trying to console a distressed wife as well as a 4 year old who is devastated and cant stop crying. How do you explain to a child what has happened?
Say a prayer for him please - we have had him for 8 years and has not enjoyed the best of health at all. We gave him the best. Somewhere there is a photo of him on TCS - say hi for me and let him know we always loved him, always will.
Take care everyone

I will be sending prayers to your family.

I know how hard it is to lose what seems like everything in such a short time. You did the best thing for your kitty, he most likely would have suffered. My dog had liver cancer and toward the end, it was just best to put him down and let him rest. He was my baby for 11 years, so I can completly relate. Especially when it feels like it will never stop, but rest assured it will. Things will slow down and life will get back on track. This is just a big speed bump you need to slow down for.

I think your best bet is to tell your son the truth. Let him know that your kitty was in a lot of pain and the only way to ease the pain was to put him to rest. You'd be amazed at how much children understand and how consoling they are. Allow your son time to maybe talk about how he's feeling about everything and talk to him about it. I'm sure that will help him understand more.

My prayers going out to you.
Hang in there!

OMG! I am sorry! Kev you are such a wonderful person, you don't deserve the bad things happening to you.
Take some time and regroup, we will still be here waiting for you when you come back!

Oh, Kev, I'm so sorry! You had no alternative but to have him put to sleep. May he rest in peace. I think kids can to some extent comprehend death, so your best bet is just telling your son the truth - that the cat was just too sick to live. You've had a really rough time lately, and I hope you find the strength to get through this rough patch.

Oh Kev, I am so sorry. You certainly have had your share this past year.

I know it's hard for you to believe right now, but you did do the right thing. You allowed your baby to pass on to the Bridge with dignity, and without the pain he would have had, had you not done the compassionate thing for him.

You are such a warm and caring human being, and I pray that things will start turning around in your life very soon.

I'm so sorry. It must be hard to console your wife and child when you, yourself are grieving. My thoughts and prayers are with you. You did the right thing, letting him go instead of living on to suffer.

Kev, I'm so sorry for your loss. You abosolutely did the right thing, and try to remember that he knew love the entire time he shared with you. Kids are often smarter than we give them credit for. Tell him the truth. If he doesn't understand something, let him ask questions, and let him know that you and Mom are very sad too...

What wonderful parents you were! Your baby is at peace, he is no longer in pain. Such a wonderful blessing you gave him, of course you did the right thing. Don't berate yourselves for doing a kindness in a time of need. Take some rest and enjoy the wonderful memories that you have. You are truely loving and kind.

Kev,

Sometimes the right thing is the hardest to do. And you did the right thing.

Your entire family will be in my thoughts. Take the time to grieve for all your losses. When you are ready, we will be here.

Kev -

I am so very sorry for your loss and everything else you are going through. You did the right thing, it shows how very much you loved your kitty. It's the hardest decision pet owners have to make. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Oh Kev, I am so sorry about your loss. He is now at peace and at the rainbow bridge with his buddy - they are both waiting for you, with Clive.

I wish I could be there for you, but you are in my thoughts
