Did the doctor want to check the stone by sending it out to a lab? That way they can see what it's made of an see if there is any diet modifications he may need.
Greycat ,I really don't know if they want to send it to the lab or not . The Dr really did not explain a hole lot to us . It is just like we were waiting for 1 hour after Mike gave them the urin sample , I finaly went to see the doc and ask him for what we were waiting so long for . Then he said we wait on the lab , what we have guessed anyway . There I also found out that Mike also may get a cat scan , what the doc did not say while he was in the exam room with us . But what can you expect , we went on base to the hospital .

Mike was in a lot of pain this morning and this pain killer did not do a hole lot for him to take the pain away . Maybe it was , but having so much pain it don't seem like it . Mike also said if he is not passing the stone today that he may not go to work tommorow and call in sick . I guess yoviher was right .

I know that the painkillers don't seem like they're doing much, but think of it this way: That 5mm stone is like trying to fit a marble thru a piece of surgical tubing - sure, it'll work eventually, but there's going to be a lot of stretching in that tube before it can happen. That stretching (and possible tearing, which is what's causing the blood) is what's causing all that pain. It is a shame they didn't just go ahead w/the lithotripsy, if it was borderline, but that's Army (military) healthcare for you!

Tell mike to stop being such a MAN and tell his CO/supervisor what's going on - I'm sure they will sympathize and not give him a hard time about taking the day off. Hope he's feeling better soon!! (tho even if he's not I'm sure he'll be going on that trip next week!)

Jeff..... morphine, and barely touching the pain (that was a big one)... describes perfectly my experience with Percosec and Bentyl. In my case it was able to pass, and you can imagine how it was, I can't start to imagine how it must be.

No need to describe it. Jeff described it the best way possible. Very Painful is the understatement of the year, and it's beyond anything I myself have experience befored or since. And this is coming from a black belt in Tae Kwon Do who knows what getting a bad hit is. I truly sympathize.

Look, tell your hubby to stop being such a macho and take the day off! Surely the boss will understand (specially if he has had kidney stones previously). Man, trying to go to work with a borderline kidney stone is a torture so big that the Spanish Inquisition gets red of envy at not having been able to use it. Tell him to take it easy.

You guys are so great
, than's again .

Ok his pain killer is : LORTOBS 500 mg and hope I was spelling right .

I am sure Mike will take a day or two off with those pain he is having
. They all know at work , last week he come home over an hour early from work . And he is a person who is never late for work , rather to early and always can count on .
Now I asuming (sp) that each time Mike has pain the stone is moving ? Is that corect ?

Lortab!! Great stuff! on anything but kidney stones. Yes, you are correct. Each time he has a sharp pain, it it likely the stone is inching its way thru. You are both in for a long weekend, but keep nagging him about the fluids and he will eventually be ok.

Alright, I can't help myself any more, I HAVE to say it: "This, too, shall pass!"
(Talk about schadenfreude!)

Hedi,

Nothing I can add but my thoughts for this to soon be over for Mike. I'm glad he went in to find out what was happening, and hope this will be a one time only experience for him!

I was going to say this definitely sounded like kidney stones and you can't always see the blood in the urine. About 4 years ago I passed a stone about the same size as the one your husband passed and I was vomiting from the pain it was so severe. The best thing he can drink is clear fluids without added vitamins or minerals.

When he goes to the urinary specialist they will see if there are any others that need to be taken care of (by surgery or sound waves is the normal procedure) and he'll have to go through a multi-day urine test (and they'll do tests on the stone) to see what caused the stone. In my case it's calcium and I cannot take calcium supplements and I have to watch my calcium intake. There are two other primary minerals in kidney stones but I can't remember what they are. There's actually a lot of good information on the Internet and depending on what they find he may end up being on a restricted diet.

The other thing you need to be aware of is that once a person has had a kidney stone that they're more likely to have increased experiences as they get older. It's also possibly hereditary, but they're not sure. All the men in my family have had them, I'm the first woman (and women are also rarer).

My prayers are with Mike...please let us know how he is doing and tell him we are thinking of him...I did get a kick out of the men describing the pain...they have obviously nevr been through childbirth! Having your lips pulled up over your head would probably be preferable to my 31 hours of labor.

Well, I'll find out in November as to how comparable it is. I'll let you guys know if you want. My Mom says that you tend to forget the pain of labor as you grow older because you actually get a reward for it, whereas you don't with the kidney stone.

Heidi, Lortabs are hydocodone, very similar to percocet. It is a classed as a narcotic analgesic. It has codeine in it and tylenol (also comes with aspirin in it) however I doubt Mike got that form as aspirin would increase bleeding. Please tell your husband to start using metamucil or something similar, as any narcotic medication, especially one with codeine is very constipating!!! Good Luck!

When my brother had kidney stones last year, they gave him Vicoddine(sp?) for the pain and it dulled the pain to a degree but it didn't completely go away so that might be an idea to pass by the doctor.

Hope he feels better soon.

Yes Heidi...any drug store or Wal-Mart will have it. It comes in a canister, it's a powder that you mix in juice or water. My guess is that he might be a big baby in taking it, even though it comes flavored (orange) or plain, so it's also available in wafers or maybe even in pills. Ask the pharmasist, if you are not sure. Adding some prunes to his diet will help as well. The metamucil also comes sugar-free, in case Mike has some diet restrictions. I'm thinking of you both!
