Any news, Hedi? He really has to go get checked out - that much pain is definitely a sign that things aren't right.

Nothing frustrates me as much as this quote "Pain is weakness leaving the body", my dh, retired Army, gives that as his answer way too often when I'm worried about something. However, being right a couple of times, reminding him of the time I had to wheel him into the hospital for bloodwork because he had such a bad pneumonia he couldn't walk...that makes him sometimes listen.

Hedi, just keep at him and dont' get too

So far out in left field I got lost
Hedi, Mike really needs to go to the ER and get checked out. Is there anyone you can call and bulldog him into going? I have been fighting with kidney problems for 8 long years. I have been in severe pain off and on for various infections that noone could find out why until I saw this new dr last week. Kidney problems are nothing to play with. My Dad died from renal failure.

I would hate like hell to hear that Mike being a stubborn person had severe damage due to a stone or infection. I myself have a lot of scare tissue due to the infections I have had over the past 8 years and problems caused by the infections that required surgery. I had that done last Thursday and am still not quite up to par.

Mike quite trying to be SUPERMAN and go to the doctor.

Sure sounds like your husband has kidney stones to me. I have never had them, nor do I ever want to go through it. From what I have geard, it is one of the worse pains you can have. A girl I work with had them. He does need to get to the doctor, but, if he drinks a lot of water, that can help to pass them. That is, if he really does have stones. Only a doctor will be able to tell.

Thank you all for your reply's
.

My husband come home today from work after only bin at work for 2 hours , in pain again . Even the pain killer he took did not help . So we went to the emergency room and were there for 4 1/2 hours
. I hate being in a small room that long and almost freak out , but for his sake I stayed . He had to give urin and after waiting almost 2 hour of the darn test to come back , Mike also had blood in the urin
and the Doc said he had a stone in the kiddney .Then Mike had to get a cat scan (sp) done . Mike's kiddney stone is 5 mm big . The Dr said the size is right at the edge where it still could pass , but then it may not pass . The Dr also said that it looks like it was already moving . I have no clue how he would know if a stone has moved , but he is the Dr and must know . So now all the doc gave Mike was some strong pain killers for him and Mike has to see the urinary ( grrr cant spell it ) specialist in 3 - 5 days . He also need to drink lots of fluit and hopefuly the stone will pass .

Any body knows by change how you can get a kiddney stone ???

Thank you all again for your suport you have given to me
to all
.
I am so glad Mike finaly went
At least now we know what we are dealing with .

Puerto Rico... land of rice and beans.
5 mm..... ouch! I can't start to imagine that!

Ok... a kidney stone can be for different things, but in my case it is that the body has a hard time metabolizing the calcium in the urine, therefore it starts to clump in the kidneys in stalagmites (sp) and when it breaks and goes down the urinary tract, we call it stones.

Your hubby, should simply take a few days off (No work, no phyisical activity, including sex) and spend it in bed, with the pain killers and drinking LOTS of water and cramberry juice (My tastes say that Cramberry juice is not drinkable, so it was a torture for me). Place a good Tv set near by with his remote and cable tv and let him spend the day.

He's in my thoughts.... Kidney stones ain't the kind of thing I wish to anyone.

Normal activity is fine as far as I was told. No alcohol untill well after it passes. I was told that stones are caused by a variety of things, and no one thing causes them because they can be made up from different minerals. Hopefully the Doctor gave him a cone shaped screen to urinate through to catch the offending stone. If it goes to a lab they can determine what its makeup is and give him an idea on how to prevent them in the future. A safe rule of thumb according to my doctor is to drink plenty of fluids, and the juices. If you do some research on the net you'll find that cranberry juice is preferred by a lot of Doctors (Nephrologists and Urologists).

I wish him well. They were giving me morphine when I had mine and it wasn't touching the pain. I empathize.

Hello Heidi,

You've received some good advice here! Don't know if the Dr mentioned it to Mike, but if he passes the stone, it will be more than likely be very painful. A males ureter and urethra are very narrow. It's like trying to pass a watermelon seed thru the eye of a needle. Cranberry juice is good, but all it does is change the PH of the urine. A large amout of fluid (any kind but caffeine/alcohol) will help the stone to move. The Dr determined the stone was moving by seeing tiny tears on the kidney wall...that's why there was bleeding. The doctors I worked with used to write this on the patient's chart...FLUIDS, FLUIDS, FLUIDS. So tell Mike he has to drink a lot...gallons! I don't know what kind of pain med they gave him (probably percocet) but more than likely it will make him constipated (like he needs one more thing!) The extra fluids might help that, but he might want to take some metamucil, or something similar. Hey how about canned pumpkin...it works for cats! Good luck, and send Mike my best. And you can also tell him since he has a "virtual private duty nurse", he can expect my bill !

"Very Painful" would be the understatement of the year. Grabbing your upper lip and pulling it over the top of your head would probably be very painful. This was beyond anything I've felt before or since. Great advice on the gallons of water. Literally a gallon or better per day is what I still drink to this day. I should have stressed that more. Thanks for picking up where I slipped.

I am not going to tell Mike what you said in your post , or he may be scared to death .
Due to Mike's diet , he is already trinking a lot of water every day and at least drinks a gallon of water a day .Maybe that already has help him move the monster .
Thank you Mom Of Franz for your reply . I don't know what meds he got , I will look where it is and what it is and post it later . I remember looking at it and said take for pain when needet and I think there are only 6 taplets in the bottle .

That filter thing is use to verfi that the stone has passed when it does he will know it even with the meds. If the pain gets real bad he might try walking around that seemed to help me pass my last big stone. And tell your husband that he was being more of a wuss for not going to the Dr. Good luck on passing it

Glad he finally went in to get checked. Hopefully he will pass the Kidney Stone without a problem and very soon. Just keep him downing those liquids, especially water. And yes it will hurt very very bad when it passes. He may even pass out so hopefully someone will be there with him.

Did the doctor want to check the stone by sending it out to a lab? That way they can see what it's made of an see if there is any diet modifications he may need.
