That is so very odd.... I have never before heard of that kind of thing.....
However, I have been using clumping clay litter from both Tidy Cats, and other brands. My cats are all healthy, except for Orei, how at the moment is thought to have a slight urentary tract infection... *thinks about it* OH dear, could that be the reason. perhaps i should change the litter they use. What do you all suggest?

This is the only article of its kind in existence. I found it when I was doing an article on litter a few months ago, and I started researching around it and found that unless the kitten is actively eating a lot of the clumping litter it really isn't harmful. Though common sense suggests it is prudent to use regular clay litter, because most kittens will sample litter for some reason, but once they get bigger, unless they are ill, they stop doing it.

One veterinarian suggested that in order to prove this theory that clumping litter kills, the study itself would be so intusive that no one dares to attempt it. Because face it, this would mean force feeding clumping litter to kittens and cats!

Here is the article I found

Of course it isn't healthy for a cat to eat clumping litter! But how many cats eat enough of the litter to become ill? I've used clumping litter for 10 years and not one cat has ever eaten it. I never use clumping litter for young kittens because young kittens do it everything. But adult cats shouldn't eat the litter and therefor clumping litter shouldn't be a problem for adults. The amount of litter that maybe sticks on to their fur is absolutely not enough to cause any extensive damage. If for some reason an adult cat eats the litter, the solution is easym change the litter and the not so easy part is to try to find out what's causing the cat to eat the litter because that's not natural behavior.

This is some Swedish breeders and vets experience on the subject.

I'd used it for years with Gus but then my vet told me to stop as even the dust can be harmful. Plus they get it on their feet and then lick it off

I have heard that clumping clay litter has sodium bentotate (?) in it, which is not good for cats if they eat it. Mainly, I've heard that for very young kittens, the clumping litter is not good, since they tend to sometimes eat litter, which can cause a problem if it clumps up in their digestive system. That makes sense to me, so I do not use a clumping clay litter since I still have a young 'un in the house. Natural litters such as Swheat Scoop, and World's Best clump as well as the clay litters, and I don't have to worry about anybody eating some because they are digestible.

I had wanted to try swheat scoop for a while just because of the dust factor, so I bought some last night & I had to laugh because the first thing Jordan did was stick his head in the box & try to eat the litter. I stoped him & now that Levi has used the new litter Jordan gets it, but it made me laugh cause I don't think I ever saw him eat the clumping stuff.

Yeah, our cats ate World's Best when we first got it. We switched only one of our boxes at first, so they could use the other one until they got used to the new litter...

My friend referred to it as "the treat box."

Sometime the next day, they decided it was a fine litterbox, and stopped eating from it. When we cleaned it thoroughly and added new litter, though, at least one of them took a few more bites.

It was pretty amusing for us humans, but I don't think it's very uncommon.

I stopped using the clumping litter because of all the dust in it. If the dust isn't dangerous, which I would imagine it to be, it can't be very pleasant for a kittie to scratch up the litter and get a face full of dust.

There's dust free clumping litter.

Thanks, that's good info for when/if I get a Litter Maid. I was using Tidy Cat clay liitter, btu switched to Yesterdays News when we brought Ripper home, because he has a problem with his upper respiratory system when he was a little baby.

With the Swheat Scoop, I have noticed that the smaller bags (I think it's 10 and 25 lbs) are much less dusty then the 40 pound bag. Even the big bag though, I don't find the dust as offensive as regular litter.

So far I really like it. The clumping action is awsome! I was afraid it wouldn't clump very well, but I think the clumps are harder than regular clumping litter. I bought the 25 lb bag & when I filled the boxes I noticed virtually no dust. There is a little when I scoop, but much less than some of the other litters I've used.
