Yesturday our stray cat had kittens (2 white and 4 grey.) is it possible to tell the sex at this early stage or do we have to wait untill they grow a bit? I've never had kittens this small before. The're so cute and cuddly.

These pics were taken just after they were born and the other two didn't come for hours after.

It's possible...but it's also very possible to be completely wrong...LOL

Cats are notoriously hard to sex, however it can be done.

You will have better luck if you wait a few weeks.

You have to be really good to be able to sex them at this age, even vets will sometimes get it wrong.Keep those babies warm, keep them in an enclosed box or other area they need to be kept very warm especially if for some reason mom doesn't want to help in that area.

I don't have anything to add to what MA and Spotz have said, but they're really cute!

The genetics are already well established...it's the secondary gender traits that take a bit of time to become physically obvious.

And yes...they are really cute...I want to see the other two...or all six..pictures pictures pictures

When my cat Mimi had her kittens, I guessed the sexes right! 2 boys and 2 girls! Sometimes it's hard, especially when you've never had newborn kittens before.

The easiest way is to look under the tail of each kitten and hold two side by side until you have two that look different. A female will have an upside-down exclamation mark and a male will look more like a colon : Also, the male's urinary opening is lower than the females and he will also have a little lump between his anus and this opening. This will later become his testicles once they descend.

Hope this helps.

Well, I haven't had a chance to check them out yet. I was struck with a horrible cold on Sunday and I have been in bed ever since, except to go to the doctors. I have a chest infection and plugged up sinus's and I just feel horrible. I'm coughing and snuffling (I've gone through a whole box of klenex
) I hate being sick!! Anyway, 2 of the kittens didn't make it, one white one and one grey and white one. The white one was kind of strange. We got up Monday morning and she was laying outside the box stiff and we were sure she was died, so we brought her in put her in a cardboard box for later burial (I was gong to be late for my doc. app) and left it in the garbage can so Shadow and Graycie couldn't get to the box, we leave and come back about 3 hours later, I go to bed and later about five hours after bringing the kitten in she comes back to life
Did I ever feel bad, if it wasn't fo my cold I would have burialed her, but alas it wasn't to be, we got up yesturday morning and they (white and grey and white) were gone. We left them for hours but eventually we burialed them. Oh well, 4 left. I'm feeling alittle bit better today so maybe I'll get some pictures.

They are precious!
I just want to give them each a big hug!
I love them! i really think you should wait, although hard, until they are older. After all,you wouldn't want to find out Jimmy is a jamie!

kitkatz, just a tip, try using puffs kleenex with lotion! It works wonders!!! That's all I ever use when I'm sick.
Sorry to hear about the two little kittens.
Jingles for the other ones(that's a horsey term for good kind of vibes... It comes from jingling the curb chain on a horse's bridle)

Those are the kleenex I have been using, they sure are nice. I'm feeling so much better now. Wonders what antibiotics will do for a person
I have a dreadful cough now but thats even getting better. We had a change in the weather again, Tuesday was +20 celcious, today (Thursday) was +4 celcious. Is it a wonder I'm sick????

Anyway the kittens are doing great, thanks to Kumbulu's picture, I believe we have 2 boys and 2 girls but I don't want to handle them too much with my germs so I have been staying away for most of the time. We can't keep them so I don't want to get too attached but how can you help that?

I have decided to give them names from LOTR. The white one will be Arwen 'cause I'm preety sure shes a she if it turns out that shes a he I'll change the name to Legolas, and the grey ones are Samwise, Merry and Pippen. The two that passed on were Boromir and Theodred (the only two members of the stories who have passed. I haven't scene ROTK yet. Got a countdown on my calendar to the dvd releases!!)

I have pictures up in Fur-Pics called Baby Kitten Pictures. I can't seem to link here so you'll have to look for it, sorry.

Hi Alicia. I'm good at sexing kittens to, and yes they can be done from the moment they are born. Have you taken the rest of the litter to the vet? Hope so. They are very cute, I must go and check out the rest of the pictures.
