Scrape off as much of the mess as possible. To remove smell (before cleaning the stain), blot with water and a bacteria/enzyme digester, such as Odormute, available in some pet stores. (This product chemically removes the sources of odors, instead of just masking them.) Sponge with water and blot the stain to remove. As an alternative, sponge with a solution of 1 tablespoon Borax in 2 cups warm water, with a few drops of antiseptic. If stain persists, work in carpet shampoo on a sponge. Rinse and blot dry.

Pet Stains, Feces
Immediately scrape away the deposit with a disposable spoon or a plastic bag. Sponge stains with warm water and a few drops of ammonia. As an alternative, blot with a towel soaked in a solution of dishwashing liquid and warm water. Soak up as much as possible with a clean towel. Blot the stain with a solution of one part vinegar and two parts water. Blot again with a towel. Cover the stained area with clean towels. Place a few heavy books on top and let dry for several hours. Caution: Always spot-check first.
